IFTA SCREEN DISCUSSION: YOU ARE NOT MY MOTHER

The Irish Film and Television Academy (IFTA) is delighted to present this special ONLINE discussion for You Are Not My Mother as part of the Irish Academy awards viewing season.

In Attendance: Writer/Director Kate Dolan, Actors Hazel Doupe and Carolyn Bracken, and Producer Deirdre Levins

Kate Dolan’s feature Debut You Are Not My Mother is an eerie Irish folk horror wherein a teenage girl’s mother goes missing only to return with an increasingly uncanny change in personality. Something strange has happened to Angela (Carolyn Bracken). Of this her teenage daughter Char (Hazel Doupe) is certain. Ever since her single mother returned home following an inexplicable absence, Char has observed subtle changes in posture, personality, and appetite. The differences are welcome at first — prior to her disappearance Angela had been bedridden and quick to shirk parental responsibilities to her brother or mother. But as Angela’s behaviour grows increasingly wayward, Char’s scrutiny quickly turns to dread as a disturbing and horrific possibility emerges. Pervading this doppelgänger drama with an unsettling atmosphere and multiple finely tuned scares, Dolan deftly crescendos her contemporary fable to an incendiary climax that cements the filmmaker as an exciting new talent in delivering character-driven chills.

IFTA SCREEN DISCUSSION: WHO WE LOVE

The Irish Film and Television Academy (IFTA) is delighted to present this special ONLINE discussion for WHO WE LOVE as part of the Irish Academy awards viewing season.

In Attendance: Director/Writer/Editor Graham Cantwell, Writer Katie McNeice, Actors Clara Harte, Amy-Joyce Hastings, Dean Quinn, Sound Designer Mark Murphy, Sound Recordist Caimin Agnew and Conposer Joe Conlon.

Lily (Clara Harte) starts her final year at secondary school full of hope and excitement, and with the beginning of an inkling of who she might be. And after a summer filled with firsts – first crush, first kiss – she’s starting to come to terms with the fact that she’s gay. But for the other kids at her Dublin school, Lily’s sexuality is a flashpoint, something which marks her out as the target for increasingly violent bullying. It’s the unflinching scrutiny of the less upbeat elements of the gay coming of age narrative, together with sparky performances from Harte and Dean Quinn (as GBF Simon) which elevates this teen/young adult-aimed drama above some of the less gutsy examples of the genre.
