Apple TV reveals autumn launch date for flagship original series, Foundation

Apple TV+ has revealed that their adaptation of Foundation, Isaac Asimov’s classic sci-fi novels, which stars Jared Harris will release in autumn 2021.

The news was revealed by writer David S. Goyer and producer Michael Malone when speaking with Maltese publication LovinMalta. Malta is said to features quite prominently as an external filming location in the show, while the internal aspects of the show were filmed in Troy Studios, Co. Limerick.

Due to the length and breadth of Asimov’s novel series, which includes Foundation, Foundation and Empire, and Second Foundation, the project’s showrunners are optimistic that it could run for eight seasons.

"With Foundation we can tell the story, hopefully, over the course of eighty episodes; eighty hours, as opposed to trying to condense it all into two or three hours for a single film," Goyer said.

The 10-episode series, which follows a band of exiles attempting to rebuild civilization after the fall of a Galactic Empire, is produced by Skydance Television for Apple and co-produced by Irish production company Wild Atlantic Pictures. Foundation is executive produced by David S. Goyer, Robyn Asimov, Josh Friedman, Cameron Welsh, David Ellison, Dana Goldberg, and Marcy Ross.

With a budget of over €45m, and a production that employs almost 500 people, Apple TV+’s original series is Ireland’s largest-scale production ever.

The series has been incredibly influential in media, informing such works as DuneStar Trek, and Star Wars, and is still one of the core books for any sci-fi reader. Despite this, it has had a difficult journey to our screens.
