The Curious Works of Roger Doyle to release digitally on Volta

Brian Lally’s feature documentary about Irish musician and composer Roger Doyle, which released in Irish cinemas last October, will be available on Volta from May 29th.

The documentary studies the life’s work of Irish musician Roger Doyle, and closely observes him presenting one of his most ambitious musical projects to the general public – his first electronic opera.

Known as the “godfather of Irish electronica," the film follows Roger from August to November 2016 as he prepares for the staging of his opera, Heresy, in Dublin. Roger Doyle has since been conferred as a “Saoi” (wise one) by the President of Ireland, Michael D. Higgins; the highest award available to be offered to an Irish artist.

The Curious Works of Roger Doyle enjoyed a successful tour of the Irish festival circuit with screenings in Galway, Cork, Dingle Film Festival, and Docs Ireland in Belfast, and went on limited release across select cinemas last October.

"I am really pleased that Volta is going to host the Irish online release of ‘The Curious Works of Roger Doyle’. We had a small boutique cinema run for this film last October/November, which was great but it was based around just three cinemas,” said director Brian Lally. “The film got a strong critical reaction and good word of mouth but the film was out of cinemas before a lot of people got a chance to see it. The Volta release will finally bring the film to a national audience.”

“I have been using the Volta site myself quite a lot recently to catch up on recent Irish films and their player works really well,” Lally continued. “The site is a great resource for fans of Irish and foreign cinema, especially smaller titles that didn't get a chance to play in cinemas or had a very short run, which is increasingly common now. Then with the disruption of the lockdown, a lot of good films went straight to an online release. I plan on bringing out a physical DVD/Blu-Ray version later in the year when some degree of normality returns to retail but the physical copy market is becoming increasingly niche, mainly kept alive by old school film collectors like myself. In the meantime, the HD version on Volta looks top-notch".

Hailed as a "triumphant homage to a musical genius" in the Sunday Independent, The Curious Works of Roger Doyle was produced and directed by Brian Lally through his production company Instigator Films and part-funded by Screen Ireland.

The Curious Works of Roger Doyle is available on Volta from May 29th.
