Brian O’Malley to Direct New Film ‘Immaculate’
11 Sep 2018 :
The Irish director has signed on to direct the suspense thriller from Catapult Entertainment Group.

Immaculate, written by U.S duo David R. Flores & J. Hunter Roe, follows a minister having his own crisis of faith after a personal tragedy. He then is taken captive by a mother who believes her son possesses extraordinary abilities that are rooted in evil.

Christopher Watkins and Kevin Goetz from Catapult will produce the project alongside Charles Stifle from U.S production company Needle Eye Productions.

Speaking with IFTN, Director Brian O’Malley told the website:

"With Let Us Prey I set out to make a hard hitting, genre saluting horror movie that would get the attention of horror fans. For my second film, The Lodgers, I was attracted to the script because it remained under the umbrella of the supernatural, but it allowed me to explore material beyond horror and create something more elegant in form. Immaculate is also very much a supernatural film, but it’s one which will subvert expectation.”

“It feels like it’s going to be a particular type of story, within a particular type of genre, but then surprises by being something entirely different. I found the characters to be really well formed and nuanced, with an overall story arc that is unexpectedly spiritual. And unusually for something so dark, it’s a story which will ultimately feel quite uplifting. I’m also very excited to make my first American film, something I’ve wanted to do since I chose the path of film Director.”

O’Malley first came to prominence with his debut feature, ‘Let Us Prey’ starring Liam Cunningham. In 2017, his horror film ‘The Lodgers’ set in rural Ireland, went on to screen at Toronto International Film Festival and won an IFTA film & drama award for Best Visual Effects.

Speaking to Deadline, Producer Kevin Goetz said:

“At its heart, Immaculate is a character piece that slices open the beast that can exist in all of us.”

Producer Christopher Watkins added:

“We’ve found an immensely talented director whose style and vision lends itself perfectly to the material and will truly elevate the project in the genre space.”

The casting process is currently underway, with production due to start later this year in Alabama.
