Irish animation studio Piranha Bar has announced today that their first ever pre-school series called ‘Mya Go’ has premiered on RTÉjr this month. The series, which is expected to cost in the region of €2.6 million, is jointly funded between Ireland and Cataluña in Spain.

'Mya Go' is the central show in RTEjr’s pre-school summer programme. The programme duration is five minutes, with each episode taking Mya Go on an upbeat journey of discovery and fun adventures. There are 104 episodes in the current series, with further spin-offs planned.

The series follows the adventures of bubbly young 5 year old Mya. Set in the bustling and sunny town of Everyday, Mya Go lives with the Go family and introduces a kaleidoscope of interesting characters across the series. These include Tommy Stop, Ruby Make, Betty Cone, Miss Coach, Billy Win, Skipper McKipper, Mamma Make, Granma Go and Sophie Play.

The creator and director of the series is Alan Foley, whose daughter Mya was the inspiration behind the show. Aoibhinn McAuley plays the central character Mya Go while Alan’s other daughter Melissa who at only 6 years old gives her voice to Sammy Go and Emily Share. The series is illuminated with the voices of a host of Irish actors who play various child characters. The narrator of the series features the voice of Irish actor Pat O’Regan.

In this Irish-led production, Piranha Bar has involved the talents of renowned lead writer Sam Morrison.  Sam’s work includes the award-winning and highly acclaimed Peppa Pig, Ben & Holly’s Little Kingdom and The Octonauts for the BBC.

Before bringing it to life in animation, Alan’s wife Catherine Cunningham produced a series of fun t-shirts based on Alan’s designs. The t-shirts featured an early version of Mya Go and were instant best-sellers for Catherine’s t-shirt business.

Commenting on the launch, Alan Foley said; ‘’We are absolutely thrilled with the initial response to Mya Go. The project is a joint venture between Dear Will, Piranha Bar and Motion Pictures Entertainment from Catalan Spain. We also received support from RTÉjr in order to make the series. The project would also not be possible without the backing of Dearbhla Regan from Screen Ireland, Pauline McNamara from RTÉjr and the BAI. We are immensely grateful to everyone’s support in bringing this project alive.’’

'Mya Go' is currently screened on RTÉjr each day at 7.40 am and 11.30 am. According to Dee Forbes, Director-General, RTÉ: “Mya Go’ is bringing a wonderful splash of fun and colour to RTÉjr this summer and is a central part of our output on the channel. The reaction to Mya's fun adventures has been really positive and we look forward to enjoying more of these discoveries and adventures unfold over the coming episodes. The quality of this production by Piranha Bar again highlights the best-in-class animation that we produce in Ireland.”

Series Producer Nicky Gogan added; “We are three quarters of the way through making the 104 episodes so Mya will be having plenty more adventures.”
