Film Screenings, Masterclasses and Q&A Sessions at The Festival of Curiosity
06 Jul 2017 : Katie McNeice
Still, 'Notes on Blindness'
The annual festival is a legacy project dedicated to Dublin’s status as the European Capital of Science in 2012, and attracts over 45,000 attendees each year.

It runs in various locations across the city from July 20th-23rd.

It represents the intersection of intersection of art, science, technology and design in our capital city and has a strong film-related line-up this year, including two events with Oscar-nominated documentary filmmaker Scott Hamilton Kennedy.

Screening: ‘The Happy Film’
18:00, Thursday July 20th, Smock Alley Theatre
Austrian designer Stefan Sagmeister is doing well. He lives in New York, the city of his dreams, and he has success in his work, designing album covers for the Rolling Stones, Jay-Z and the Talking Heads. But in the back of his mind he suspects there must be something more. He decides to turn himself into a design project.

Can he re-design his personality to become a better person? Is it possible to train his mind to get happier? He pursues 3 controlled experiments of meditation, therapy, and drugs, grading himself along the way. But real life creeps in and confounds the process: art, sex, love, and death prove impossible to disentangle. His unique designs and painfully personal experiences mark a journey that travels closer to himself than ever intended.

Admission to this event is €7 per person.

Screening & VR Experience: ‘Notes on Blindness’
18:00, Saturday July 22nd, Smock Alley Theatre
In the early 1980s, after decades of steady deterioration, writer and academic John Hull lost his sight. To help him make sense of the ensuing upheaval in his life, he began to keep an audio diary. Across three years, he created over 16 hours of material; these recordings would form a unique testimony of loss, rebirth and renewal, excavating the interior world of blindness.

‘Notes on Blindness’ recreates Hull’s fascinating and deeply moving experiences through an immersive hybrid of documentary, dramatic reconstruction and highly sensory cinematic techniques and sound design.

Notes on Blindness: Into Darkness allows audiences to access John Hull’s world of blindness in an exploratory, user-led experience. The VR piece draws upon John’s sensory meditations of blindness, in particular the awakening of his appreciation of ‘acoustic space’. Guided by narration from his original audio diaries, the experience uses binaural sound tethered to real-time 3D visualisation, to map environments built up through multi-layered patterns of sound.

Admission to the screening is free (booking is required) however the VR experience is a ticketed event.
