‘The Collectors’ documentary shot on iPhone to air on RTÉ

The 57min project directed by news co-ordinator Eleanor Mannion is set to air on RTÉ One at 21:35 tomorrow, Tuesday July 26th.

The project is the first of its type to air on the national broadcaster, having been shot entirely on an iPhone 6S Plus.

The story follows six Irish collectors, whose interests span everything from Coca-Cola to Lego, and have developed in a lifelong passion for their hobby.

Mannion’s experience as a mobile journalist for the RTÉ Newsroom meant she approached the project having already had several news bulletins shot and edited on an iPhone for the national broadcaster. She became involved in a fortnight of brainstorming with the RTÉ documentary development team in 2015.

It was here that she presented the idea of examining how people form bonds with items and brands which cause them to become collectors for life. In order to pitch the idea to RTÉ Commissioning Editors, Mannion shot her initial reel on the familiar iPhone HD, the quality of which garnered a positive response.

In a recent article on Creatives Go, Mannion states the coinciding advent of 4K shooting on iPhone caused Head of the RTÉ Factual Unity Seán Mac Giolla Phádraig to suggest filming the entire project on an iPhone in 4K.2.

RTÉ’s Head of Technology Glen Mulcahy recently explained to the Independent that the technical standard achieved in this way is actually higher than what is normally broadcast. He further states:

“It won't work for everything - we're not going to cover matches with smartphones - but mobile technology is going to be increasingly the first choice for content producers. It is easy to use and allows the creator to get intimate and sincere responses as the equipment is less intimidating."

Filming locations for the project include counties Cavan, Cork, Dublin, Kildare, Meath and Sligo. International locations also include London, New York and Paredes de Coura in Portugal.

Nikolas Panteris and Alan Sullivan from Egg Post Production worked closely on the project with executive producer Jean Devlin. The grading and online editing skills of the team at Egg have ensured a high-quality viewing experience has been maintained, while taking steps toward progressive content creation in this groundbreaking project.
