Ripper Street Streams on Amazon from Today
14 Nov 2014 : Deirdre Molumby
The new series of Tiger Aspect and Lookout Point’s period crime drama ‘Ripper Street’ will stream on Amazon Prime Instant Video from tonight, launching with an exciting double bill.

Created and written by Richard Warlow (‘Waking the Dead’, ‘Mistresses’), the Victoria crime drama will see Matthew Macfadyen, Jerome Flynn and Adam Rothenberg reprise their roles as Detective Inspector Edmund Reid, Detective Sergeant Bennet Drake and Captain Homer Jackson as they fight to keep order in the East End of London.

IFTN spoke with producer Lucy Dyke ahead of the series’ premiere. Lucy’s credits include TV series ‘The Ice Cream Girls’, ‘Pure Mule’ and ‘Prosperity’. “I love working in Ireland. I think crews in Ireland are utterly brilliant and are incredibly well-versed in how to shoot and run productions. I think it also really helps that Ireland is quite a small place and everybody knows each other. As a result you get teams that work really well together and that’s not just within their own department but inter-departmentally as well. The Irish HODs on ‘Ripper Street’ would constantly talk to each other during production which meant that everything was really synched and everyone was on the same page.”

The majority of the series was shot in Dollymount Strand and the Clancy Barracks in Dublin with Element Pictures producing with the initial shooting taking place in Manchester and Loughborough in the UK. Key Irish HODs involved in the production of series three included costume designer Leonie Prendergast, production designer Stephen Daly and DOPs James Maser and Suzie Lavelle. Jennifer Hegarty worked on make-up, Carol Dunne did hair, and Mary Alleguen was the line producer for this series.

The new series was edited in London with all visual effects done in Screen Scene. The Dublin-based studio also did the VFX for the previous two seasons. “Screen Scene have done a great job for us,” Lucy tells IFTN. “This season, especially episode one, has an enormous visual effects sequence that is much bigger than anything else we’ve done before. They really showed their talent in producing this.”

‘Ripper Street’ was axed by the BBC last year but it was later announced that it would return for a third series through Amazon's Prime Instant Video, exclusive to subscribers, and then air a few months later on BBC1.

“Amazon came to us and said they loved Ripper Street and wanted it bigger, better, sexier and grittier so they encouraged us to really go for it,” says Lucy. “They supported the programme makers and gave the artistic freedom to use the budget the way that we wanted, to create the storylines that we wanted to create and to tell the stories that we wanted to tell.

“The biggest difference with the Amazon input is that we don’t have a restricted cut-length. When you work for the BBC, the episodes have to be 58 minutes long but with Amazon, they wanted us to create the show that we wanted to create. So some episodes are 63 minutes, some are 67 minutes, and we even have one episode which is going to be 75 minutes long, almost a feature-length episode. The BBC is still involved so we will be cutting down the episodes again for BBC length.”

The third outing will pick up four years later in 1894 and follow the story of the McNaughton memorandum, a Scotland Yard list of Jack The Ripper suspects. “The difference with this series is where we concentrated a lot on ‘story of the week’ in the previous season, this series has a big serial strand with a major story that is set up from episode one. The storyline carries all the way to the end of the series and it involves all of our core characters. The series will also delve very deeply into those lead characters this year.”

The first episode of the third series of ‘Ripper Street’ will be available on amazon Prime Instant from 9pm tonight. The series will screen on BBC1 in 2015.
