The BAI will launch the policy at 9:30 tomorrow, Tuesday December 6th in the Marker Hotel, Dublin, as part of its ongoing initiative to foster research and activities to promote media literacy.
The policy sets out a range of skills that have been identified by the BAI to help people to navigate new and emerging content platforms.
A key objective of the Media Literacy Policy is to provide leadership and to facilitate a coordinated approach to the promotion of media literacy in Ireland. The BAI’s policy approach also aims to describe and promote media literacy in a way that is meaningful and relevant; to foster research in the area; and to complement educational initiatives already in existence.
The policy will be launched by BAI Chairman, Professor Pauric Travers and Senior Manager at the BAI, Stephanie Comey. Independent expert in media literacy and digital engagement, Martina Chapman will provide context to the policy and its development, and representatives from groups already involved in the promotion and delivery of various media literacy activities will also speak at the event. They include:
- Sheila de Courcy, RTÉ
- Emma Bowell, Framework Films
- Irena Cvetkovic, CRAOL – The Community Radio Forum
- Simon Grehan, Webwise Project Coordinator, PDST Technology in Education
The BAI policy was developed in consultation with a broad range of stakeholders, including audio-visual content providers, public authorities, academia, civil society organisations and those involved in online activities.
