IFTA Gala TV Awards Focus: Sound – Television Nominees
29 Sep 2016 : Katie McNeice
With the Academy’s annual awards ceremony dedicated to honouring television talent in Ireland set to take place next Friday, October 7th, we take a closer look at the nominees in each of the twenty-three prestigious categories.

The first of these is the Sound category, which sees four nominees representing this integral element of television production.

The winner of this category at the 2015 IFTA Gala TV Awards was 'Ceoilchuairt' from Magamedia.

‘1916: The Irish Rebellion’
This three-part documentary project narrated by Liam Neeson engages with the strong centenary theme among this year’s line-up with John Brennan of Ardmore Sound, and Garret Farrell and Michelle Fingleton of Screen Scene nominated. The title also features in the Documentary Series category, and is directed by Pat Collins (Silence) and Ruan Magan (Angel).

It combines rarely seen archive footage with international contemporary footage and interviews with leading experts and historians.

‘1916: The Irish Rebellion’ is produced by COCO Television and is an initiative of the Keough-Naughton Institute for Irish Studies at the University of Notre Dame.

‘Danger Mouse’
This children’s animated series based on the 1981 series of the same name centres on spy Danger Mouse and his hamster sidekick Penfold. Dominic Lawrence (Go Jetters), Sol O’Carroll (Peter Rabbit) and Andrew Kirwan of Number 4 Sound Recording & Design at Windmill Lane are nominated.

‘Danger Mouse’ is produced by Boulder Media animation studio in Dublin in partnership with FremantleMedia Kids & Family Entertainment. This project is also nominated in the Animation category.

‘Deoch an Dorais’

This Irish language documentary tells the true story of toughest Irish immigrant America ever experienced, lowly alcoholic vagrant Mike Malloy. The project details, for the first time, how Molloy survived over twenty attempts on his life in Depression-era New York. Dean Jones and Colm O’Rourke of Raygun and John Brennan are nominated.

‘Deoch an Dorais’ from Magamedia screened at the 2016 Galway Film Fleadh and aired to TG4 in December of 2015.

‘HUP’

Stephen McLoughin is nominated for his work on this thirteen-part musical series, which celebrates traditional musical performances from all over Ireland.

Red Shoe Production produces the series, which airs to TG4. Paschal Cassidy directs, with Maggie Breathnach and Tristan Rosenstock as producers.
