TG4 kicking off year with 1916 centenary programmes
06 Jan 2016 : Seán Brosnan
‘Seachtar na Cásca’
TG4 kicks off 2016 and marks the 1916 Centenary with a combination of archive programming and new content.

Wednesday nights at 7:30pm will re-screen ‘Seachtar na Cásca’: profiles of all of those executed after the Rising. TG4 is also dedicating a prime time slot on Tuesday nights, 9.30pm, as a showcase for a series of major documentaries and drama documentaries that focus on some of the stories, events and personalities that shaped the nation in the decades that followed since.

Also airing throughout January is ‘Cuimhní ón mBlascaod’ (Sundays at 9.30pm) – a documentary series where Blasket islanders recall the days when “summers were long and life was good”. This series presents recently re-mastered film archive interviews that reveal memories of a vanished world.

There will also be a second series of ‘Port’ (Sundays at 10pm) which follows Muireann Nic Amhlaoibh and Scotland's Julie Fowlis as they take to the road to explore the shared musical roots of Ireland and Scotland. They start their journey in Ross-Shire in the company of stalwarts Séamus Begley, Zoe Conway and Rachel Walker.

Also returning to TG4 this January is long-running country 'n western talent show ‘Glor Tire’ (Wednesdays at 10.30pm). It will return for another 15 week series, featuring nine of Ireland's best performers as they each mentor a new contestant in a quest to win the ‘Glór Tíre’ title. Presented by Aoife Ní Thuairisg with the judging panel, John Creedon, Caitríona Ní Shúilleabháin and Charlie McGettigan.

Dara Ó Cinnéide returns with his weekly panel on ‘Seó Spóirt’ (returning on January 29th), as the new season of GAA kicks off with the league competitions.

Beginning on January 4th on TG4 is the international co-production ‘An Captaen Flinn’. Captain Flinn and his pirate crew's world is the Seven-and-a-half Seas, a sparkling ocean with jungle islands, sandy beaches and treasure caves. They set sail to right the wrongs of the despicable Pirate Dinosaurs. This international production was co-produced by the Connemara-based Telegael company and recently won the PIXIE award.

Also beginning on January 4th is the ninth season of ‘Bog Stop’, the fast-moving quiz show which pitches school teams against one another on 30 plasma screens known as the Zone. The show is hosted by Máire Treasa Ní Dhubhghaill.

Also returning this January on TG4 is the third season of acclaimed drama series ‘The Bridge’ (Thursdays at 11pm). This season follows Saga as she is assigned to a case where famous Danish gender activist and owner of Copenhagen's first gender-neutral children's nursery is found murdered in Malmo. The murder sparks the beginning of a series of spectacular crimes reaching back into Saga's own past.
