IFTA to split the Annual Awards into Two Ceremonies
18 Mar 2015 :
Film and Drama Awards to be held in May, Television Awards to be held in October
The Irish Film & Television Academy (IFTA) has announced that the annual IFTA Awards Ceremony has been split into two separate distinct smaller Award ceremonies ie; a Film & Drama Awards and a Television Awards.

Call for entries for the IFTA Film and Drama Awards are now open, for more information go to www.ifta.ie/awards.

Each Ceremony will celebrate and honour the very best of Irish creative talent working in their respective fields across Film & Drama production and Television Programme making.

For the past eleven years since 2003, and throughout the recession, the Academy has showcased the very best of Irish talent to the world at large, building a national pride and international awareness of Ireland’s small but very talented and growing industry, with the home audience building to a record viewership of 1.24 million peak viewers in 2013.

NEW STRUCTURE

Over the past 10 months, the Academy has consulted with a wide selection of industry practitioners and key organisations in Ireland and internationally and peer Academies in Europe including BAFTA, to ensure that the most up-to-date best practice Awards structure and production procedures are in place for Ireland. A mammoth task each year had been the presentation of over 42 Irish award categories in one evening. Based on key recommendations and best international practice the Awards will now be presented at two separate Awards events, similar to other countries, awarding film & Drama productions and separately Television programmes reflecting Ireland’s growing and vibrant industry. Through the two ceremonies the Academy will showcase to the world what Ireland’s small but outstanding film and television community has to offer: In May - excellent and challenging feature films and dramas; and in October - entertaining television programmes and engaging factual content.

The IFTA Film & Drama Awards will take place on 24th May 2015 in Dublin and the IFTA Television Awards will be taking place on 17th October 2015 in Dublin.

THE AWARDS PROCESS

The Academy has 1000 Members of industry professionals across 14 Chapters of Discipline (Directors, Producers, Actors, Writers, Cinematographers, etc)

On average 550 Members register to vote each year and participate as Jury alongside international Jury and experts which in recent years has included – Peter Jackson, Sir Alan Parker, Neil Marshall, Christopher Hampton, Sean Bobbitt, Leo Davis, Jina Jay, Trisha Biggar, Conrad Pope and Steve Gaydos.

The independent process of the Awards is best international practice across submissions, viewing process, platforms and the voting process will be independently audited.

BROADCAST

The Academy is delighted to announce that TV3 will be an official media partner of the IFTA Film & Drama Awards (May 2015) and will deliver coverage of all the excitement, guests, nominees and winners at the ceremony in an exclusive one hour Awards Special. As the Ceremony will not be broadcast Live or as-live, the Awards Special will ensure that the Irish public can join in acknowledging the great work being achieved. Later in the year TV3 will be the Official Broadcaster for the IFTA Television Awards in October.

AWARDS PRODUCTION - ROLL OUT

The Awards production is a culmination of a minimum of 6 months intensive work by a small Academy team across funding, partnerships, planning and co-ordination with production companies, broadcasters, state bodies, distributors, studios, agents, reps and publicists across Submissions, Screenings (Cinema & Online), international Jury Panels (each chaired by an Academy Member), Voting, Nominations, national Announcements, communication, PR, Event planning, logistics, transport, accommodation, film clips, content, visuals, statuette production, and event production – guests, set, clips, graphics, script, etc.

THE ACADEMY YEAR-ROUND

The Academy has been dedicated to nurturing and supporting the film and television industry in Ireland since 2003, through its extensive Learning programme of Academy monthly events each year and through honouring, rewarding and celebrating Irish creative talent at the annual Irish Academy Awards Ceremony.

President Michael D Higgins’ recently acknowledged the Academy’s work stating 'Through its work IFTA is playing a crucial role in our drive for national recovery by raising the profile of our industry across the globe showcasing our productive talent and attracting more and more productions to our island based on the skills and excellence of all our experts and craftspeople.'
