New TV Series ‘Building Ireland’ Starts Tonight
08 Jul 2014 : Deirdre Molumby
Architect Orla Murphy
‘Building Ireland’ is a 6x25’ documentary TV series which explores, investigates and re-discovers historically significant buildings and engineering achievements in Ireland, exploring the design and construction of landmarks, bridges, buildings, ports and railways over its six episodes. A team of expert presenters in engineering, architecture and geography explore some of the finest examples of Ireland’s building and engineering heritage.

The technological challenge will be set in an historical and geographical context, with reference to the social-economic impact of the build. Communicating these themes with competence, excitement and accessibility is the task for the able team of presenters – architect Orla Murphy, engineer Tim Joyce and geographer Dr Susan Hegarty. The series is especially interested in engineering heritage that reflects a variety of geography, function and historical importance, and which has left an indelible mark on a community.

Location live action filming is complemented with archival film, stills and documents and some CGI illustration animating the construction techniques involved. 3D graphics and short animated sequences complement the narrative, with animation and rostrum by Design for life.

The documentary series was produced by Esras Films in association with Brian Gray, for RTÉ with S&V funding from the Broadcasting Authority of Ireland. Gray directed and produced the series with line producer Darina Clancy and series producer Peter Kelly. Production sound was by Hugh Fox, Mick Cassidy, Trevor Cunningham, Philip O’Reilly, Kieran Curtin and Damien Clifford. The DoPs for the series Mick O’Rourke, Michael O’Donovan and Ronan Fox, and Stephen Murphy was editor.

Tonight’s episode sees engineer Tim Joyce investigate how an 800 metre tunnel was bored through Goggins Hill and how a viaduct was built across Laune Valley at the dawn of Ireland’s railway age. Architect Orla Murphy will explore the relationship of gunpowder with tunnel construction, and geographer Susan Hegarty will discover the markets and industries fuelling the railways.
