Three new Irish animated series now available to watch on RTEjr and CBBC
09 Dec 2019 : News Desk
Critters TV
Projects from Irish animation studios Turnip & Duck, Ink and Light and Kavaleer Productions will all feature on UK and Irish broadcasters this winter.

Each of the new animated series were supported by Screen Ireland with Boy Girl Dog Cat Mouse Cheese™ from Kavaleer currently airing on CBBC, while Critters TV from Turnip & Duck and Ollie from Ink and Light both feature on RTÉjr this Christmas.

Currently airing on CBBC is Boy Girl Dog Cat Mouse Cheese™, produced by Watchnext Media and Kavaleer Productions. The series was ordered by the BBC for CBBC in the UK, commissioned by the French television network, Gulli and pre-bought by RTÉ with additional funding secured from Screen Ireland. Boy Girl Dog Cat Mouse Cheese (BGDCMC) has a comedic take on the blended family. The dad’s “sons” are a boy, a dog, and a mouse. The mom’s “daughters” are a girl, a cat and an anthropomorphic piece of cheese. Though greatly different (and weird to outsiders), the new family learns to love each other and live together under one roof. Available on CBBC at 7.45 am and 3.45 pm every day, this hilarious animated series can be best described as the blended family of “Brady Bunch” meets the lovable dysfunction of “Modern Family.”

Little ones’ eyes will be lighting up this Christmas with Ink and Light’s new series Ollie, which premiered this week on RTÉjr. Ollie is an animated series for children 3 to 5 years, featuring a new forest favourite, Ollie the owl. Right in the middle of a very busy city, there is a peaceful place. It's a cosy park, closed off and forgotten, a true oasis. This is where you will find Ollie, the little blue owl and his friends - a small stork, a young frog, and five little birds. Together they all have lots of adventures. Ollie is a co-production between Ink and Light in Ireland and Lunanime in Belgium, created by Belgian director Anton Setola. You can now watch Ollie on RTÉjr at 10 am, as well as on the RTÉ player.

Dublin-based animation studio Turnip & Duck launched their first-ever original comedy animation series Critters TV on RTÉjr this October. The series is aimed at a co-viewing and family audience and promises to bring a unique “animals-eye-view” to natural history documentaries. Funded with the support of RTÉjr, Screen Ireland, Broadcasting Authority of Ireland and Section 481, each eleven-minute episode features a short “show-within-a-show” nature documentary. As the documentary plays out, we get to enjoy the reactions of six different Irish animal families (The Foxes, The Squirrels, The Owls, The Badgers, The Hedgehogs and The Ticks) watching from the comfort of their front rooms. Critters TV is created, written, produced and directed by Aidan O'Donovan and Colm Tobin along with creative director Ian Benjamin Kenny. Critters TV airs on RTÉjr at 10.40am and is also available on the RTÉ Player.
