Kite Entertainment Sign Development Deal with Sky
23 Apr 2018 :
Kite Entertainment have signed a development deal with Sky, to create a writers room to develop a scripted entertainment series.

Announced in September last year by Sky’s Philip Edgar Jones (see IFTN’s interview HERE), it’s a boost to the Irish production section with a new content fund of over €2 million as Sky searches for a new homegrown Irish hit entertainment show.

Kite, who produces ‘Gogglebox’, ‘Ireland’s Fittest Family’ and ‘Ireland’s Got Talent’ will set up a 12 week writers room for a ‘mix of comedy voices’ to develop a scripted entertainment series.

It is hoped that this will lead to a full commission from Sky.  “The nice thing for us is that this is not a beauty pageant. They have put a bet on us and are backing us with the intention of turning it into something,” said Kite managing director Darren Smith

The new writers room will being work next month, and start filming material in June.  As reported by Laura Slattery in the Irish Times, Kite optioned the rights in Ireland to ‘Saturday Night Live ‘ last year and pitched it to broadcasters here. Although the project for Sky is “not Saturday Night Live”, the move “made us interesting to Sky”, said Mr Smith. “They were quite taken by the ambition or the delusion of us optioning Saturday Night Live.”

Speaking with IFTN last autumn, Philip Edgar Jones, Head of Entertainment at Sky, said “Ireland has a thriving production sector and we want to bring the biggest and best of Irish entertainment to Sky customers across Europe. Sky 1 is the home of entertainment and we are looking for bold, action-packed shows. We’re very excited and encouraged by the discussions we have been having with Irish Indies.

“We’ll always eventually ask, ‘who’s in this, though?’ But for starters we’d just like to see something that makes us laugh, is unashamedly daft, immensely shareable on social and laugh-out-loud funny.”
