Stoney Road Seals Capital Letters Distribution Deal
21 Jan 2005 :

Ruth Negga & Karl Shiels in Capital Letters

Stoney Road Films have announced their plans to distribute Ciaran O’Connor’s low-budget social drama ‘Capital Letters’ starring Ruth Negga and Karl Shiels.

This follows the distributors success in 2004 with ‘Bloom,’ Sean Walsh’s impressive screen adaptation of James Joyce’s masterpiece ‘Ulysses.’

‘Capital Letters,’ which will feature in next month’s Dublin Film Festival, was voted second in the Best First Feature category at last year’s Galway Film Fleadh and won three IFTA nominations. Negga, last seen on Irish television in the hit series ‘Love is the Drug’ and star of the forthcoming Neil Jordan pic ‘Breakfast on Pluto,’ stars alongside and Best Actor in a Film IFTA nominee Karl Shiels (Veronica Guerin Intermission, Spin the Bottle).

Negga plays the part of Taiwo, a runaway illegal immigrant who encounters Keely (Shiels), a small-time crook who takes Taiwo under his wing and pushes her into a world of vice and prostitution. However, it is the strange love story that develops of mutual dependence and mutual exploitation between entirely believable people against this violent background that gives this film its engaging and bitter-sweet tone.

Speaking to IFTN Roger Hudson of Stoney Road Films said his colleague Simon Hudson first saw the film at the Galway Film Fleadh and was immediately interested in a distribution deal. "This is one of those rare films where the audience really cares what happens to the central characters" he said, "there was an amazing cast, beautiful acting, great editing and a neat tight script and you can see all of that reflected on the screen."

Also from Stoney Road Films’ production arm comes ‘Wordweaver, the Legend of Benedict Kiely’, which will be broadcast in RTE’s Arts Lives series in March. An atmospheric study of the life and times of the veteran writer now 85, it is directed by Roger Hudson and produced by Simon Hudson. It is told through the words of Kiely himself and his close friends Seamus Heaney, John Montague, Tom Kilroy, Colm McCann, Val Mulkerns and Stephen McKenna.

‘Capital Letters’ is a New Decade Film & Television production, produced by Nuala Cunningham and Linda Cardiff, edited by Mairead McIvor and scored by Niall O'Sullivan.
