nominees for the 7th Annual British Independent Film Awards have been
announced with Irish actors and films shortlisted in four categories.
Blind
Flight actor Ian Hart has been nominated in the Best Actor category.
He faces tough

competition from Paddy Considine (Dead Man’s Shoes), Geoffrey Rush (The Life & Death of Peter Seller), Daniel Craig (Enduring Lov) and Phil Davis (Vera Drake).
Imelda Staunton (Vera Drake), Natalie Press (My Summer of Love), Anne Reid (The Mother) and Scarlett Johansson (Girl With A Pearl Earring) will compete with Irish actress Eva Birthistle for the Best Actress Award who has been nominated for her role in Ken Loach’s ‘Ae Fond Kiss’. Eva has is also nominated twice in the same category at the Irish Film and Television Awards this weekend and in the BAFTA Scottish Awards nominations announced today.
British actress Romola Garai has received a Best Supporting Actress nomination for her role in Damien O’Donnell’s latest film ‘Inside I’m Dancing.’ While John Crowley, director of 'Intermission', is in the running for the Douglas Hickox Award for Debut Director.
The awards will be held on Tuesday 30 November at Hammersmith Palais. Shane Meadow’s ‘Dead Man’s Shoes’ leads the nominations with eight, followed by Mike Leigh’s ‘Vera Drake’ with seven and Paul Pavlikovsky’s ‘My Summer of Love’ has received five nominations.
This year’s BIFA jury is chaired by Oscar winning writer/producer/director Anthony Minghella (Cold Mountain, The English Patient) and also includes actors Helena Bonham Carter , Christian Slater, and ‘Veronica Guerin’ star Cate Blanchett.
