Kevin Rockett’s latest book examining Irish Censorship has been launched in Dublin. A timely arrival following the Film Censors approval of Michael Winterbottom’s controversial ‘9 Songs’, ‘Irish film censorship: A cultural journey from silent cinema to internet pornography’ is available in shops now.
The book, described at the most complete history of film censorship ever
published in Ireland, runs to over 500 pages in length. It lists and analyses
hundreds of cinema movies, rental releases and uncut movies that have
come to the attention of the censor since the early part of the twentieth
century.
As well as providing a history of censorship, it also gives an
insight into Ireland’s national psyche and the risks involved in any
censorship system.
