High Def Arctic Documentary Begins Shooting
23 Aug 2004 :

John Murray in the Arctic

Crossing the Line films have begun principal photography on a major feature documentary being shot over the next year in the Canadian Arctic.

The film tells the extraordinary story of John Franklin’s lost Arctic expedition of 1845- one

of the greatest mysteries in polar exploration. The expedition was sighted off the coast of Greenland on the 26th of July 1945 and they were never seen again.

The story has a strong Irish connection. Franklin’s second in command was the Irishman Francis Crozier on whom responsibility fell once the commander had died early on and a number of the crew members were Irish. The film has exclusive access to a major ongoing search for one of Franklin’s shipwrecks under the polar seas and the production will involve four filming expeditions above the Arctic circle. If the lost ships are found it would be a major discovery in exploration history.

Directed by Emmy winner Peter Bate and produced by John Murray it is the first Irish feature documentary to be shot in High Definition. Backing comes from TG4, the Irish Film Board, MEDIA and a host of major international broadcasters including Channel 5, History UK, History Canada, ABC Australia.
