The Belfast Film festival 2004 will open with a Gala screening of John Sayles “Casa De Los Babys” on the 25th of March. The film is described as a “clash between over - and underprivileged cultures” focusing on the issue of motherhood. Starring Academy Award winner Marcia Gay Harden with co-stars Daryl Hannah, Lili Taylor and local talent Susan Lynch. Susan is set to introduce the film and will host a festival workshop.
The Festival is running from the 26th of March to the 2nd of April and promises an exciting range of Irish and International talent enough to “excite, educate and enthuse” cinemagoers. Features of the festival include an extended shorts competition, classics, musicals, animation and a new addition to the programme this year, a Drive In Event screening of Stanley Kubrick’s “The Shining” at the Talbot Street Carpark.
The festival will close with the Irish premiere of Michael Winterbottoms new film “Code 46”, starring 2004 Academy Award winner Tim Robbins in the lead role and Academy Award nominee Samantha Morton. It is a love story set in a dystopic near future where cities are heavily controlled and only accessible through checkpoints. People cannot travel unless they have "papelles," special travel insurance. Outside these cities, the desert has taken over and shanty towns are jammed with non-citizens - people without papelles whose lives are severely restricted.
Other highlights include Robert Altman’s “The Company,” Oliver Stone’s “Comandante” and European premieres of Bertolucci's “The Dreamers” and Julio Mendem's “Basque Ball.” The Irish films featured include The Honeymooners, Headrush and Song For a Raggy Boy.
