The film was premiered during the Cork Film Festival in October 2003 and was given a thumbs up by audiences and critics alike, described as a “timely and important” film.
Based on the true story by Patrick Galvin, the cast is headlined by Irish-American actor Aidan Quinn (Evelyn, Practical Magic, Legends of The Fall) and Iain Glen (Tomb Raider, The Blue Room) with Marc Warren (Band of Brothers), Dudley Sutton, Alan Devlin and introducing John Travers and Chris Newman.
The story follows one man’s courage to stand up and fight the tough fascist regime in a boys’ Irish Reformatory School.
Empire magazine said: “Raggy Boy doesn't pack the same punch as Mullan's
film (Magdalene Sisters) but it benefits from committed performances from
its adult leads. Quinn's awakening from wounded war veteran to child savious
is convincing and cliche-free, while Glen's turn as the sadistic Brother
John is nothing short of terrifying”.
It is being distributed by 'Raggy Boy's sales agent, Winchester Films,
which was recently bought by ContentFilms, Ed Pressman's (Wall Street, The
Crow, Das Boot, etc) production/distribution company and will be released in all territories of the UK. Cert 15.
