Trailer Releases for Ridley Scott’s ‘The Last Duel’; Shot on location in Ireland

Matt Damon in The Last Duel
Ridley Scott’s 'The Last Duel' which partially shot in Tipperary, Dublin and Wicklow has released a first look trailer. The film was written by Matt Damon, Ben Affleck and Nicole Holofcener.

Directed by 4-time Oscar nominated director Ridley Scott (Gladiator, The Martian, Blade Runner) theThe Last Duel boasts a star-studded cast including Matt Damon (Good Will Hunting, The Martian), Ben Affleck (Argo, Gone Girl), Adam Driver (Marriage Story, Star Wars) and Jodie Comer (Killing Eve). 

The Last Duel is set to open in Irish cinemas on October 15thand was partially shot in Ireland, with Cahir Castle and county Tipperary; Bective Abbey, Meath; and locations in Dublin and Wicklow all used as filming locations following Production halting in Ireland during the first pandemic lockdown in 2020.  

Set during the Hundred Years War, The Last Duel follows Marguerite de Carrouges (Comer) after she is viciously assaulted by Jacques Le Gris (Adam Driver), a nobleman in King Charles VI court who denies the charge. After resolutely accusing her attacker, her husband Jean de Carrouges (Damon) challenges Le Gris, his former friend & ally to a duel.

Written by Nicole Holofcener, Affleck and Damon, (in both Affleck and Damon’s first co-writing credit together since their Oscar-winning script for Good Will Hunting) the film is based on real events, examining the assumptions about the dissolution of de Carrouges and Le Gris’ relationship. The film is an adaptation of Eric Jager’s book “The Last Duel: A True Story of Crime, Scandal, and Trial by Combat in Medieval France.”

Talking about making the film and working with its talent, director Ridley Scott said:

“I love working with Matt, so it was an added bonus to be able to work with him and Ben as both actors and as screenwriters, along with Nicole Holofcener, and I knew it would be a great result."

"I had admired the show Killing Eve and had been looking for the opportunity to present Jodie Comer with a challenging role. Her performance as Marguerite will make her one of the great actresses of her generation."

In a joint statement, writers Holofcener, Affleck and Damon said,"This film is an effort to retell the story of a heroic woman from history whom most people haven’t heard of. 

"We admired her bravery and resolute determination and felt this was both a story that needed to be told and one whose drama would captivate audiences the way it moved us as writers.”

The Last Duel is set to release in Irish Cinemas on October 15th
