Martin Scorsese, Irwin Winkler, and Sing Street director John Carney have set their sights on a George Gershwin-inspired musical titled Fascinating Rhythm.
The feature project is said to have been developed by the trio with Endeavor Content, and will see Carney (Sing Street, Once) direct the film, which he co-wrote with Chris Cluess.
Oscar-winning director Martin Scorsese will produce the film with his long time producing partner and Oscar-winning producer, Irwin Winkler (Rocky, Goodfellas). Endeavor Content will handle sales for the film.
Named after a Martin Gershwin-written song from 1924, Fascinating Rhythm “follows a young women’s magical journey through New York City past and present”.
According to Screen Daily, the Gershwin estate is on board the film, which will feature the artists music throughout. Scorsese is said to be a long-time admirer of Gershwin whose most famous works include AnAmerican In Paris and Rhapsody In Blue.
Carney is best known for his work on Irish indie classic Once, which won the audience award at Sundance Film Festival in 2007. Once also famously saw the film’s lead actors and musicians, Glen Hansard & Markéta Irglova, pick up the Best Original Song Oscar for Falling Slowly in 2008.
He later wrote and directed the hit Irish comedy-musical Sing Street, which received a Golden Globe nomination for Best Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy in 2017.
