Scott Frank and David S. Goyer among guests announced for IFTA's upcoming events programme

The Irish Film & Television Academy (IFTA) has announced upcoming highlights from its Academy Learning Programme of Events, featuring discussions & masterclasses with international industry leaders.

The Academy will host internationally renowned filmmakers in the coming weeks such as writer/director Scott Frank (The Queen's Gambit, Logan), Producer Rebecca O'Brien (I, Daniel Blake, The Wind that Shakes the Barley), writer, showrunner, director David S. Goyer (The Dark Knight Trilogy, Foundation), editor Maryann Brandon (Star Wars: The Force Awakens), and producer Andrew Macdonald (Trainspotting). 

Both acclaimed producer Rebecca O’Brien and Oscar-nominated editor Maryann Brandon will take part in events in March, whilst IFTA will also host a Film PR & Marketing event in association with Polymath PR this month. Scott Frank, Writer, Director & Co-Creator of Golden Globe-winning Drama series The Queen's Gambitwill join IFTA for an event at the start of April. Also announced were events with The Dark Knight Trilogyscreenwriter and Foundation showrunner David S. Goyer, while producer and Danny Boyle collaborator Andrew Macdonald (Trainspotting, Ex Machina) will also feature for an event, with dates expected to be announced in the coming weeks.  

Last year IFTA hosted 35 online events for its membership and the public including the IFTA Screen Discussion series, which promoted the films submitted to the 2020 Virtual IFTA Awards and the IFTA Skills in Focus series in association with Screen Skills Ireland. The Irish Academy has previously hosted renowned international and Irish film professionals such as Martin Scorsese, Michael Moore, Liam Neeson, Sharon Horgan, Peter Bogdanovich, Ethan Hawke and Maureen O’Hara.

IFTA Upcoming Events

Scott Frank

Scott Frank is the Writer, Director & Co-Creator of Golden Globe winning Drama series The Queen's Gambit (2020). He has received two Oscar nominations to date for Best Adapted Screenplay for Out of Sight (1998) and Logan (2017). 

In 2008, Scott Frank's directorial debut, The Lookout, won the Independent Spirit award for Best First Feature. His sci-fi epic Minority Report (2000) starring Tom Cruise won the Saturn Award for Best Science Fiction Screenplay. Get Shorty was nominated for both a Golden Globe and a Writers Guild of America Award for Best Adapted Screenplay and, as was Dead Again, was nominated for an Edgar Award for Best Mystery Screenplay. Other key credits include Little Man TateMaliceHeaven's PrisonersThe InterpreterMarley & MeThe Wolverine and A Walk Among the Tombstones (which he also directed).

Rebecca O’Brien

Rebecca O’Brien, is a multi-BAFTA nominated producer of films including Ken Loach’s Cannes’ Palme d’Or winners The Wind That Shakes the Barley and I, Daniel Blake and Lynn Ramsey’s Palme d’Or nominated You Were Never Really Here. O'Brien, Loach, and writer Paul Laverty run production outfit Sixteen Films, established in 2002, and together won an outstanding contribution to film award at the Scottish BAFTAs. Loach has had 14 films in competition at Cannes, all but one of them produced by O’Brien. Her first film with Loach was Hidden Agenda and since then they have made eighteen feature films together and many other documentary and short projects, including Land and Freedom (Best Film EFA 1995), My Name is Joe and Looking for Eric.  

In 2006, The Wind that Shakes the Barley won the Palme d’Or in Cannes. The Angels’ Share won the Jury Prize at Cannes in 2012. I, Daniel Blake won Sixteen Films its second Palme d’Or in 2016, and won Laverty, Loach and O'Brien the BAFTA Award for Outstanding British Film in 2017. Their most recent collaboration Sorry We Missed You was also nominated for the Palme d’Or as was Lynne Ramsey’s You Were Never Really Here which O’Brien produced and which won best actor for Joaquin Phoenix and best Screenplay for Ramsey.

David S Goyer

David S Goyer is an American filmmaker, writer, director, producer, novelist and comic book writer. He is best known for writing the screenplays to several superhero films, including the Blade trilogy (1998–2004), Christopher Nolan's Dark Knight trilogy – Batman Begins, The Dark Knight, The Dark Knight Rises (2005–2012), Man of Steel (2013) and Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice (2016). He has also directed four films: Zig Zag (2002), Blade: Trinity (2004), The Invisible (2007) and The Unborn (2009).

In 2015, soon after embracing independent producing, Goyer executive-produced Nate Parker's feature Birth of a Nation, which sold for a record $17.5 million at Sundance, before sweeping the festival's award. He recently produced Krypton for SYFY which was shot in Belfast and is currently producing Foundation for Apple TV+ in Troy Studios, as well as The Tomorrow War by Chris McKay and starring Chris Pratt. He is writing and producing The Sandman (Warner Bros Series based on Neil Gaiman’s comics) which is due out this year, and has recently been announced as developing the rebooted Hellraiser Franchise. 

Maryann Brandon

Maryann Brandon is an Oscar-nominated American TV and film editor known for Star Wars: The Force Awakens and the J.J. Abrams’ Star Trek franchise. Brandon earned a Primetime Emmy Award nomination for her editing work on the popular television series Alias in 2001, created by Abrams and has since edited on all of Abrams' films. Brandon worked with Abrams on Star Wars: The Force Awakens, earning her an Academy Award nomination in 2016 for Best Film Editing for her work on the film, sharing the nomination with Mary Jo Markey. 

Brandon also worked with Abrams on his two highly successful Star Trek adaptations, Star Trek and Star Trek: Into Darkness. Other key credits include How to Train Your DragonPassengersVenom & Super 8. Brandon is editing the next instalment of Marvel’s Thor franchise, Thor: Love and Thunder directed by Oscar-winner Taika Waititi.

Andrew Macdonald 

Andrew Macdonald is a Scottish film producer, best known for his collaborations with screenwriter John Hodge and director Danny Boyle, most notably Trainspotting (1996) which won the BAFTA Award and received an Oscar nomination for best adapted screenplay. Macdonald received a BAFTA Award nomination for Best British Film. Macdonald’s collaborations with Danny Boyle have also included Shallow Grave (1994), The Beach (2000), 28 Days Later (2002), Sunshine (2007) and T2 Trainspotting (2017).

Together with Duncan Kenworthy, he is also the founder of DNA Films, the production company responsible for The Parole Officer (2001), 28 Days Later (2002), Sunshine (2007), 28 Weeks Later (2007), 28 Months Later(TBA), two of which Danny Boyle directed and Alex Garland wrote. He also produced Garland's directorial debut Ex Machina which received an Oscar-nomination for Original Screenplay, as well as the English writer/director’s Emmy-nominated limited series Devs

Film PR & Marketing - How to Build your Film's Profile 

The Irish Film & Television Academy, in association with Polymath PR are presenting a unique panel discussion on how to market and promote film. This event will focus on the practicalities of building a story around your film -  how to get it to reach a wider international audience, how to build your and your film’s profiles, how film festivals play an important role in that, and how to get ready for an awards push. Key areas discussed will include Film PR 101; Marketing yourself & your Film; How to build relationships; The importance of the Trades; What NOT to do; Promoting at/to film festivals; and How to create an Awards Campaign.
