WIT and Nemeton TV's Television and Media Course
There is good news for those interested in breaking into the television and media industries.

The award-winning Higher Diploma in Television and Media Production at Waterford Institute of Technology and Nemeton TV has announced an exciting and innovative new blend of practical workshops and online classes for this year’s course commencing in late September.

There will be a Virtual Open Session to answer any questions on August 26th from 6.30-7.30pm. Full details will be posted at www.wit.ie/events or pre-register at traenail@nemeton.ie

The eight-month post-graduate course is uniquely tailored to the needs of students and is particularly suited to those who wish to develop their skills while also working,” Course Leader, Dr. Moira Sweeney told IFTN.

Not surprisingly, there are limited places left on the Údáras na Gaeltachta supported course. It is highly regarded in the media sector and has an excellent employment record. Graduates go on to work in TG4, RTÉ, the BBC and in top companies such as Tyrone Productions, Nemeton TV, Independent Pictures, and Magamedia.

“The industry-focused nature of the postgraduate course attracts participants from all over Ireland who are keen to avail of workshops which are led by film, television and radio professionals with extensive experience,” Moira continued.

Central to the course are masterclasses presented by award-winning filmmakers, including producer Paddy Hayes (Rúbai, Eipic), writer Darach Mac Con Iomaire (Corp + Anam, Red Rock), and director Paula Kehoe (Deargdhúil – Anatomy of Passion and Hiroshima, My Bright Love). Further specialist workshops are provided by sound designer Keith Alexander (Ireland’s Deep Atlantic, Starboard Home), director of photography Cathal Watters (Peaky Blinders, Finding Joy) and composer and musician Dawn Kenny who has collaborated with U2 and Brian Eno.

“This excellent input means that students can produce, direct and edit broadcast standard short drama, television and radio documentaries,” Moira added. “Some also choose to create exciting digital marketing content.

The high-quality dramas and documentaries are regularly broadcast on TG4’s series Céad Seans | First Chance, and they also achieve recognition at festivals around Ireland.

“It has been a record year for the Higher Diploma at the National Student Media Awards 2020 with eight nominations and two awards across three categories for the students’ imaginative and compelling films,” Moira continued.

Alumni from the course include producer Rebecca Speer (David Brophy’s Choir of Ages, Cleas Act), assistant director Aoife Doyle (Cursed, Into the Badlands), producer Edel Fox (Noel Hill – Aisling Gearr, Gradaim Cheoil), editor Alan Devitt (Dr. Eva’s Portuguese Adventure, Gogglebox), director and editor Oisín Mistéil (Ar Thóir na Crown Jewels, Ros na Rún), director and cameraman Craig Speers (Out of their League, Pet Surgeons), and producer Caroline Dalton (Drivetime, The Ray Darcy TV Show).

“Graduates also combine their new-found skills with existing talents,” said Moira. “Musician and accountant Iarfhlaith O Domhnaill graduated from the course in 2020 and is now working as Financial Manager and Documentary Film Editor at the Irish Traditional Music Archive.”

Further details will be posted at www.wit.ie/events or pre-register at traenail@nemeton.ie.
