22 Oct 2019 : News Desk
Stephen Cleary
Film Network Ireland host two screenwriting workshops in Dublin this week with one of the world’s leading authorities on writing for film and TV, Stephen Cleary.

The two talks include one on ‘Gender, Power and New Story Structures’, which takes place on Wednesday, Oct. 23rd and Thursday, Oct. 24th, and a workshop on horror screenwriting with ‘Its Alive! Horror Screen Writing Workshop’, which takes place on Saturday, Oct. 26th and Sunday, Oct. 27th.

Both events will take place from 10 am to 6 pm in Dublin Business School, Balfe St, Dublin 2.

Gender, Power and New Story Structures (Oct 23rd&24th)

Cleary makes particular reference to successful series such as Killing Eve and The Handmaid's Tale as well as films like Mrs. Miniver and Erin Brokivich among others while investigating the role of gender in storytelling. Stephen devised this brand new programme after working with female Scandinavian film and TV professionals on a number of diversity initiatives over the last 18 months. “This workshop is about characters who aren’t male and powerful. How do you dramatise their stories, those characters, to make them compulsive?"

Its Alive! Horror Screen Writing Workshop (Oct 26th&27th)

Of the story genres we have, Horror was probably the first to settle down to a form that even now, looking back thousands of years, we would recognize. It has deep roots, but it regenerates constantly. Horror was there at the birth of the movie. Horror powered the rise of commercial theatre in the 19th century, the first great moving picture, George Melies’ Trip to the Moon, was a phantasmagoric tale of Horror. And the rise of TV drama surfs a Horror wave, from Buffy the Vampire Slayer to Stranger Things and everything in between.

This workshop lays out what a writer, director, producer or developer needs to know about the Horror genre, from precisely how the writer scares their audience, to the common internal structure of most horror stories, to the nightmarish gallery of horror antagonists and how they resemble or differ from each other. Plus an in-depth dive into the enduring fascination of the ghost story.
