Finky selected for Official Competition at the Tallinn Black Nights Film Festival
18 Oct 2019 : News Desk
Dara Devaney in 'Finky'.
Dathaí Keane’s first feature film Finky has been selected for the competition section at the 2019 Tallinn Black Nights Film Festival in Estonia.

The film, which has been hailed as a boldly original and stylish drama, will receive its International Premiere on November 27th as part of the First Features section, which highlights debut directors.

Running since 2015, the First Feature Competition is the festival’s international competition showcasing films that are the feature debuts of talented new filmmakers. The programme embodies the festival’s mission to discover emerging creative voices from all over the world, offering them a first Launchpad and helping them to gain international recognition.

Finky has been described as a celebration of life, love, and death, and the transformative power of art. Co-written by Keane and Diarmuid de Faoite, the film tells the story of Micí Finky, a musician and puppeteer who heads to Scotland with his childhood friend TomTom to start a new life. On their first night in Glasgow, Finky has an accident and is left paralysed from the waist down. He hits rock bottom, but is given a chance at redemption when he is recruited by an avant-garde circus troupe. As his journey becomes increasingly hellish and surreal, Finky realises that he must confront his tormented past if he is to ever find peace. The film premiered at the Galway Film Fleadh in July where it won the award for Best Cinematography.

Finky is produced by Eileen Seoighe, Bríd Seoighe, and Pierce Boyce for Inverin-based Abú Media Film Productions and is the first film to emerge from the new Cine4 initiative; a scheme created by TG4, Screen Ireland, and BAI to fund Irish language film-making. Finky was shot on location in Ballinasloe, Co. Galway, and Glasgow, and stars Dara Devaney in the title role of Finky. Other cast members include Ned Dennehy, Diarmuid de Faoite, Fionnuala Gygax, Eoin Geoghegan, Dolina MacLennan, and Caitríona Ní Threasaigh. Cathal Watters is the cinematographer on the film and Dermot Diskin edited. Production Design is by Mark Kelly, Costume Designer is Triona Lillis, and Steve Lynch provided the score.

Speaking about the selection, Tiina Lokk, Festival Director of Black Nights Film Festival said:

“Dathaí Keane's psychological drama is a film about life, death, and making peace with one's past. It is a moving story that is made for the big screen and madly creative at its methods of blurring the borders between what is real and what is fantasy. A competition programme is made up of single films, but at the same time, it must remain balanced and create a unified whole. Finky is Irish madness in the best sense of the word, one man's surreal odyssey, giving the competition exactly the spice it needs while balancing some of the more traditional dramas.”

Director Dathaí Keane said:

“I am thrilled that our film has been selected in the First Feature competition at Tallinn. It's an honour to be screening at a festival that prides itself on giving a platform to new voices in European cinema. I'm very much looking forward to the festival and am sure that it will be a great launching pad for our film.”

Producer Eileen Seoighe of Abú Media added:

“We are incredibly proud of Dathaí Keane’s new film ‘Finky’ and delighted that it has been selected for the First Feature Competition at Tallinn. We look forward to the future opportunities this may bring to find an audience for the film worldwide. It’s a great endorsement of the Cine4 scheme and of the tremendous work of all our cast and crew.”

Finky is produced by Abú Media Film Productions with funding from TG4, Screen Ireland, Broadcasting Authority of Ireland (BAI) and Section 481.
