'Detainment' Star Ely Solan Wins Young Artist Award
09 Sep 2019 : News Desk
Ely Solan with his Young Artist Award
The 14-year old Galway native picked up the Best Performance in a Short Film - Young Actor award for his performance in Vincent Lambe’s Oscar-nominated short film ‘Detainment’.

The Young Artist Awards are presented annually by the Young Artist Association and are regarded as young Hollywood's answer to the Academy Awards, recognizing children for their work within the entertainment industry. With his recent win, Solan follows in the footsteps of previous winners Saoirse Ronan, Leonardo Di Caprio and Jennifer Lawrence.

The young Irish actor travelled to LA with his mother Olyvia to collect the award, saying at the ceremony: “It is so nice to get recognition for something I put my heart and soul into.”

‘Detainment’ follows the story of two ten-year old boys who are detained by police under suspicion of abducting and murdering a toddler. The film is based on the interview transcripts and records from the real events of the James Bulger case which shocked the world in 1993.

Solan (Jon) stars alongside fellow child actor Leon Hughes (Robert) in what are two powerful, breakout performances by the young actors. Directed by Vincent Lambe, the supporting cast includes a number of well-known Irish actors including Will O’Connell (Detective Dale), David Ryan (Detective Scott), Tara Breathnach (Susan Venables), Morgan C. Jones (Detective Roberts), Brian Fortune (Detective Jacobs) and Kathy Monahan (Ann Thompson).

The production crew include producers Darren Mahon and Robert Dwyer-Joyce, DoP Patrick Jordan, production designer Steve Kingston, Constume designer Belle Phipps, composer Filip Sijanex, production manager Eibhlin Hewitt, casting co-ordinator Lisa Walsh and art director James Donnelly. The post-production team included Michelle Fingleton, Ken Galvin, Rob Moore and Caimin Agnew, Donal O’Kane, Warren Dowling and Diarmuid Noyes.
