The Irish actress, writer and producer will star alongside the Oscar nominee in a feature version of West End hit ‘Everybody’s Talking About Jamie’.

Inspired by a true story, the feature adaptation is inspired by a 2011 BBC Three documentary ‘Jamie: Drag Queen’. The musical that resulted from the documentary on Jamie Campbell, a drag queen who grew up on a council estate in Sheffield, went on to be nominated for 5 Olivier Awards.

Horgan is set to portray Jamie’s teacher Miss Hedge, with Grant as Hugo, former drag queen and mentor to Jamie. The lead will be played by newcomer Max Harwood, who was cast in the title role ahead of more than 3,000 hopefuls who applied to an open casting call. Other cast includes Cornation Street’s Shobna Gulati and ‘Happy Valley’ star Sarah Lancashire.

The new film reunites the original creative team behind the stage production: director Jonathan Butterell, writer Tom MacRae, composer Dan Gillespie Sells and choreographer Kate Prince. Peter Carlton and Mark Herbert will produce the project through London-based Warp Films.

The casting comes after Horgan’s highly successful production company, Merman, was shortlisted for Production Company of the Year at the Edinburgh TV Awards 2019. Horgan, who co-founded the London-based company, produced the final season of her successful television series ‘Catastrophe’ this year which she also stars in. Merman also co-produces the current HBO series ‘Divorce’, starring Sarah Jessica Parker and Thomas Haden Church.

In a joint statement, the creative team said:
“Who would have thought when Jamie Campbell first put on his prom dress, that eight years later we would have brought together the best of British and Irish acting talent to tell his story. As well as launching a brand new star in Max Harwood to play Jamie himself, we’re so thrilled to welcome Sarah, Richard and Sharon to the Jamie family.”

Producer Mark Herbert from Warp Films added:
“Warp Films are absolutely delighted that Richard, Sharon and Sarah are joining the Jamie family, and we are so excited that after nearly a year of searching we have found our Jamie- we can’t wait to start this journey with Max and to share this film with the world”

Filming will begin in Sheffield on June 24, with a release date yet to be announced.
