Irish actors Charlie Murphy (‘Peaky Blinders’) and Michael McElhatton (‘Game of Thrones’) have been announced for the new horror-thriller which will see Epic Pictures and Tailored Films reunite following their 2017 gothic horror, ‘The Lodgers’.
The Irish pair will be joined by rising stars Emma Mackey (‘Sex Education’) and Anson Boon (‘Blackbird’). Irish screenwriter David Turpin (‘The Lodgers’) has written the script that Phil Sheerin (‘North’) will direct.
‘The Winter Lake’ is slated to begin production in the west of Ireland later this month (February 18th) with Epic handling sales at the European Film Market in Berlin this week.
The film is said to revolve around a withdrawn teenager named Tom (Boon) and his troubled mother (Murphy) who find themselves on a desolate farm in Ireland. As the water lowers on a nearby seasonal lake, Tom makes a terrifying discovery that draws him and his mother into an uneasy alliance with the mysterious neighbour girl (Mackey) and her protective father (McElhatton). As dark secrets rise to the light, all four will be changed forever — and Tom will emerge into the harsh realities of adulthood.
The film is being produced by Ruth Treacy and Julianne Forde of Tailored Films with Epic Pictures and Title Media set to executive produce. EMAfilms’ Anne-Marie Gelinas will co-produce having previously partnered with Epic on ‘Radius’ and ‘Turbo Kid’. The film is supported by Screen Ireland, Epic, Creative Europe, Wrap Fund and Telefilm.
The European Film Market gets underway this Thursday and runs until February 15th as part of the Berlin Film Festival.
