RTÉ Reveals Top 10 Highest Paid Presenters
13 Dec 2018 : Nathan Griffin
RTÉ has published the fees earned by its Top 10 highest-paid presenters for 2016.

The figures are published two years in arrears, by RTÉ annually.

The figures from 2016 show that Ryan Tubridy remains the broadcaster’s highest earner with RTÉ paying his company, Tuttle Productions Ltd, €495,000 for his services. Host of 'The Late Late Show' and RTE Radio 1’s weekday morning programme (9am-10am), the presenter's earnings did not increase from 2015.

Saturday night chat show host, Ray D’Arcy, takes second spot with €450,000 being paid to What Next Productions Ltd for his services. Also the host of a weekday radio show on RTÉ Radio 1, D’Arcy saw a wage increase of €50,000 euro in 2016, the highest raise of anyone within the top ten.

Radio 1 presenters Joe Duffy and Sean O’Rourke take third and fourth spot with Duffy’s Cladaghgreen Ltd receiving €389,988 for his services, no increase from 2015. O’Rourke however, saw an increase of over €18,000 to €308,964, making him the fourth highest paid presenter in 2016, a rise from sixth in 2015.

Marian Finucane retains her place as RTÉ’s fifth highest earner with her wage increasing to €300,617 in 2016, a rise of €5,617 from the previous year.  Host of two weekend radio shows, Finucane’s company Montrose Services Ltd received payment for her services.

Radio 1 & 'Prime Time' presenter, Miriam O’Callaghan falls to sixth with her earnings remaining the same as 2015. RTÉ is listed as paying O’Callaghan’s Baby Blue Productions Ltd, €299,000 for her services.

Current Affairs presenter Claire Byrne retains her position in seventh despite becoming host of 'Claire Byrne Live' in 2015. Byrne saw an increase of €13,500 in 2016 with Derrough Media Ltd receiving €216,000 for her services.

Completing the top ten is Six One News co-anchor Bryan Dobson (€198,146), RTÉ Sports commentator George Hamilton (€186,195) and RTÉ Radio 1 Drivetime presenter Mary Wilson (€185,679).

RTÉ has said that the earning figures for 2016 demonstrate a reduction of 32% as compared to fees earned in 2008, and that the reduction continues to exceed the publicly-stated commitment given by RTÉ to reduce fees to on-air presenters by at least 30% compared to 2008 levels.

Speaking about the figures, RTÉ Director-General, Dee Forbes, said:

“The audited figures released today for 2016 sees RTÉ maintain our commitment to reduce these earnings by 30% as compared to 2008 levels, while continuing to value the significant contribution our presenters make, and to RTÉ’s ability to optimise commercial revenue to support Ireland’s public media.”

“This will continue to be an area of focus for me. Within a challenging marketplace and in the absence of meaningful funding reform, we are making significant efforts to reduce costs across the organisation, in addition to the considerable reduction in operating costs implemented since 2008.”

The total Top 10 presenter earnings for 2016 represents less than 1% of RTÉ’s total operating costs in 2016 and less than 2% of total personnel related operating costs.
