Black 47 Breaks €1 Million Mark at the Irish Box Office
20 Sep 2018 : Nathan Griffin
Irish Famine film ‘Black 47’ has passed the €1million mark at the Irish Box Office.

Directed by Lance Daly, ‘Black 47’ is now the top grossing Irish film of the year. It has also become the first Irish film to pass the €1million mark since ‘The Young Offenders’ in 2016, which was also released by Wildcard Distribution.

Black 47’ now joins the ranks of other classic Irish films such as ‘The Wind That Shakes The Barley’, ‘Michael Collins’ and ‘The Guard’ to pass this Irish Box Office milestone.  It also achieved the highest opening weekend for an Irish film in Ireland since John Crowley’s Oscar-nominated ‘Brooklyn’ in 2015.

Speaking about the success of the film, producer Macdara Kelleher, Fastnet Films said:

"We are delighted that Irish audiences have responded to the film and are supporting it in such overwhelming numbers. It's a great achievement for any film to cross the €1 million mark and take its place alongside films like Michael Collins and Brooklyn."

The Irish Independent has described the film as “an admirable attempt to go where no one has gone before”, while Irish Times Critic, Donald Clarke has said “It’s The Outlaw Josey Wales with more rain and fewer Comanche”, in reference to Clint Eastwood’s 1976 western classic.
