Cillian Murphy to Narrate Three-Part RTE Documentary on The Irish War of Independence
29 Aug 2018 :
Irish Actor Cillian Murphy has been confirmed as the narrator for the television adaptation of ‘The Atlas of the Irish Revolution.’

The upcoming documentary will focus on the events of the first Dáil in 1919, the War of Independence and the subsequent Irish Civil War in one of many productions to celebrate the centenary memorial of the War of Independence from RTE.

Murphy’s connection with this period of Irish history is synonymous with viewers having featured in the IFTA Award-winning drama ‘The Wind That Shakes The Barley’ (2006). The film, which followed the fictional story of two brothers against the backdrop of the Irish Civil War, saw Murphy receive an IFTA nomination for Best Actor. In a return to the historical period, Murphy will narrate all three episodes of the upcoming RTÉ documentary.

‘The Atlas of the Irish Revolution’ is a collection of scholarly and historical documents offering multiple perspectives on Irish history from the 1912 Home Rule Crisis, all the way up to the end of the Irish Civil War in 1923. The historical tome was named Board Gais Energy Book of the Year in 2017.

Dr. Donal Ó Drisceoil, one of the editors of ‘The Atlas of the Irish Revolution’ said:

“The focus will be very much on the War of Independence period and will include some never before broadcast archive footage as well as contributions from some 20 plus academics including many who contributed to the Atlas. It’s hoped to have the first episode ready for broadcast early next year to mark the centenary of the sitting of the First Dáil”

The RTE television documentary has not yet received a release date, but will air at some point in 2019.
