Wildcard Acquires Irish & UK Distribution Rights For Katie Taylor Documentary
30 Apr 2018 : Nathan Griffin
Screen Daily has reported that Dublin-based Wildcard Distribution has acquired the rights to upcoming sports documentary, ‘Katie Taylor: The Comeback’. Wildcard will handle the distribution of the film, which is set to be release across Ireland & the UK this summer.

This announcement comes following Taylor’s triumphant win on the weekend, which saw the Irish boxer secure the International Boxing Federation (IFB) World Title. Taylor now holds two world titles having secured the World Boxing Association (WBA) belt earlier this year.

The film is produced by Ross Whitaker and Aideen O’Sullivan of True Films, with executive credits including Andrew Frredman of Venom, who co-produced. Whitaker directs the project, which is supported by the Irish Film Board, RTÉ, and the Broadcasting Authority of Ireland.

‘Katie Taylor: The Comeback’  follows the intensely private Olympic Gold Medallist as she attempts to restructure her career following a period of turmoil in her life. Following disappointment at the Rio Olympics, where she failed to defend her London Olympics crown despite being favourite, she decided to turn pro, and agreed to let a small crew document her efforts.

In 2017, Wildcard Distribution expanded to the UK market, releasing a number of top Irish projects across the UK last year. Some of Wildcard’s recent releases include: Aoife McCardle’s ‘Kissing Candice’, Frank Berry’s IFTA winning drama ‘Michael Inside’, Emer Reynolds’s debut feature documentary ‘The Farthest’, and Irish box-office hit, ‘Cardboard Gangsters’.

Speaking with Screen, Wildcard’s Managing Director, Patrick O’Neill said:

“As Wildcard celebrates its fifth birthday, the company is incredibly excited at the prospect of working with the filmmakers and Katie Taylor on the release of Katie Taylor: The Comeback this summer.”

Ross Whitaker added:

“Katie might be shy and private but she has that presence that draws the camera and the audience to her.”
