Gabriel Byrne Set To Star In Leonard Cohen Inspired Film 'Death of a Ladies' Man'
26 Feb 2018 : Nathan Griffin
IFTA Lifetime recipient Gabriel Byrne has been confirmed for the Canadian/Irish co-production ‘Death of a Ladies’ Man’. The project, which takes its title from the American artist’ 1977 album is said to be inspired by Cohen’s late work.

Written by Canadian filmmaker Matt Bissonnette, the film follows the story of a carousing Irish academic (Byrne) living in Canada whose life takes a series of unimaginable turns when he is diagnosed with a brain tumour while his second marriage comes to an end. On learning this news, the college professor returns home to Ireland to finally write his long put off novel, and in turn meets a new love interest.

Bissonnette is also set to direct the drama, which is scheduled to predominantly film in Montreal. Irish producer Martina Niland (‘Sing Street’, ‘Once’) is set to co produce the project under her Port Pictures banner alongside producers Corey Marr (‘Who Loves the Sun’) and Marie-Claude Poulin (‘Brooklyn’).

‘Death of a Ladies’ Man’ will feature a number of Cohen’s songs and is said to have received the legendary musicians blessing before his death at the end of 2016. Director/writer Bissonnette has used Cohen’s music in previous projects.

Speaking about the project with The Sunday Times, Producer Martina Niland said:

"The majority of it will be [filmed] in Montreal. This Irish poetry professor finds out he has this terminal illness and comes back to where he's from on the west coast of Ireland. A lot of the action then plays out here in Ireland, at the moment we're looking at [Irish filming] in July and August if it all comes together on time."

Niland is hopeful that the film will have a "massive crossover potential" with both Irish and North American audiences adding:

"Obviously, festival audiences will be attracted to this, but I think it moves beyond that, especially with the Leonard Cohen angle and the music."

Gabriel Byrne was presented with the IFTA Lifetime Achievement award at the IFTA Film & Drama Awards on February 15th.

The Crumlin born actor will next appear in the upcoming horror film ‘Hereditary’, which will be released on Friday, June 15th.
