SYFY's 'Nightflyers' Series Emerges As Top Production in IFB Funding 2018
26 Jan 2018 : Nathan Griffin
George R.R. Martin’s interstellar adaptation has emerged as the IFB’s largest funded project of 2018. The announcement comes after the launch of the Irish Film Board’s 2018 funding decision was released yesterday. The SYFY series, which received a series order late, last year, has been awarded €850,000 by the IFB.

The series, which has also established a co-production deal with Netflix is currently occupying Limerick –based Troy Studios as the set continues to be built ahead of scheduled filming in February. It is estimated that six workshops are currently in use at Troy with over fifty Irish craftspeople being employed on the set production.

Irish actors Eoin Macken & Brian F. O’Byrne were also announced earlier this month, and look set to feature as key members of the ‘Nightflyers’ crew. Gretchen Mol (‘Boardwalk Empire’) is set to star as Dr. Agatha Matheson, alongside Macken (‘The Night Shift’) as Karl D’Branin, David Ajala (‘Fast & Furious 6’) as Roy Eris, Sam Strike (‘EastEnders’) as Thale, Maya Eshet (‘Teen Wolf’) as Lommie, Angus Sampson (‘Fargo’) as Rowan,  Jodie Turner-Smith (‘The Last Ship’) as Melantha Jhirl and O'Byrne (‘Million Dollar Baby’) as Auggie.

‘Nightflyers’ follows eight maverick scientists and a powerful telepath who embark on an expedition to the edge of our solar system aboard The Nightflyer - a ship with a small tightknit crew and a reclusive captain -- in the hope of making contact with alien life. But when terrifying and violent events begin to take place they start to question each other -- and surviving the journey proves harder than anyone thought.

The series is being executive produced by David Bartis, Doug Liman and Gene Klein of Hypnotic; Cerone; Buhler; Alison Rosenzweig and Michael Gaeta of Gaeta Rosenzweig Films; Lloyd Ivan Miller and Alice P. Neuhauser of Lloyd Ivan Miller Productions, as well as writer and producer of the 1987 ‘Nightflyers’ feature adaptation, Robert Jaffe.

Other top funding decisions included €700,000 for Moetion Films ‘Oops 2 – The Adventure Continues’, which is written by Richie Conroy, and directed by Sean McCormack.

Element Pictures received €600,000 for Roddy Doyle’s new project ‘Rosie’, which will be directed by Paddy Breathnach.

Director of the 2018 Oscar Foreign Language entry, Pat Collins has received €150,000 for his new documentary ‘Folkland’, produced by South Wind Blows, while Neasa Ní Chianáin and Soilsiú Films received €150,000 for their documentary ‘The Alexander Complex’.
