BBC Three Announce Release Date for New 'Young Offenders' Series
19 Jan 2018 : Nathan Griffin
BBC have announced the release date for the upcoming six-part TV series ‘The Young Offenders’, which wrapped back in September of last year. Commissioned by BBC Comedy for BBC Three, in association with RTÉ, the Vico Film Production was written, directed, and executive produced by IFTA-Winning filmmaker Peter Foott.

The spin-off series, which follows on from the hit Irish comedy that took in €1.3 million at the box-office in 2016, looks set to be available on the BBC iPlayer from Thursday, February 1st. Acclaimed producer Martina Niland (‘Once’, ‘Sing Street’) is producing the series, with each episode set to be thirty minutes in duration.

The series, which was filmed in Cork, is scheduled to debut on RTÉ in the coming weeks, with no official date announced yet.

Speaking about the upcoming series Controller of comedy at BBC Three, Shane Allen, said:

“Peter has created a very sure-footed and wholly original world that combines a winning blend of hilarity, charm and emotional impactful moments. It will, stand nicely alongside BBC Three stablemates Fleabag, Uncle, This Country, and People Just Do Nothing as a sharp and naturalistic portrait of endearing characters with a unique comic voice.”

‘The Young Offenders’ TV series will follow the coming of age adventures of loveable rogues Conor and Jock (Alex Murphy and Chris Walley, reprising their roles from the feature film) as they navigate their awkward teenage years, hatching plans and adventures to help distract from their tough home lives and their inability to stay out of trouble at school.

The comedy series will expand on the characters already seen in the film as viewers watch the lads encountering love, loss, peer pressure, and morality, with each episode set in the city the producers want to celebrate with these memorable characters.  ‘The Young Offenders’ is foremost a comedy and will be jam-packed with laughter, but it will also be tender with a lot of heart.

Speaking with IFTN after filming had wrapped, Writer/Director Peter Foott said:

It was a very intensive, but really enjoyable 8 week shoot on the TV show.  The support from the people of Cork when we were shooting on the streets was totally infectious; their enthusiasm and good wishes were overwhelming.  The weather didn't always fit in with our plans, so all the team had to think on their feet a lot, and we were able to come up with creative solutions so that we could keep to schedule.  A huge thanks to all the cast and crew, and of course the BBC and RTÉ, for all their efforts on the six part series.  We really feel that we had something special with the original film, and if the atmosphere on the set of the TV show was anything to go by, hopefully we'll be lucky again."

The much-loved characters returning for the TV series include Conor MacSweeney and Jock O’Keeffe (Alex Murphy and Chris Walley), along with Conor's long suffering mother Mairead MacSweeney played by Hilary Rose. All three actors received Irish Film and Television Academy award nominations for their performances in the film. Many other familiar faces from the film will also feature in the TV series, including Dominic McHale as exasperated Garda Sergeant Healy; Shane Casey as local fun-loving thug Billy Murphy; and PJ Gallagher featuring in a new role, Principal Walsh.  Foott continues to bring new talent to the forefront by including two exciting young actors in the cast, local Cork newcomers Jennifer Barry and Demi Issac Oviawe.

‘The Young Offenders’ was commissioned for BBC Three by Controller of BBC Three Damian Kavanagh; Controller of Comedy Shane Allen and Commissioning Editor Alex Moody; and for RTÉ by Eddie Doyle, Head of Comedy.
