Bursary Information Day for Documentary Filmmakers – January 18th

Screen Training Ireland and Creative Europe Desk Ireland MEDIA information day focusing on training opportunities offered by Creative Europe MEDIA for documentary filmmakers which can be accessed through the Screen Training Ireland Bursary scheme.

The event will also give an overall view of the European market and training opportunities and will feature presentations from Sheffield MeetMarket and key European training programmes – Eurodoc, Documentary Campus and IDFAcademy. Paul Pauwels from EDN will give a keynote on the European documentary landscape and will also cover the opportunities that EDN offers the sector.

As an example of a successful documentary which has accessed the opportunities that both Creative Europe MEDIA and Screen Training Ireland offers, a case study of ‘School Life’ (‘In Loco Parentis’) will be presented by director Neasa Ní Chianáin and producer David Rane and will focus on the highs and lows of the development process, the supports received and training programmes they participated in.

Paul Pauwels, EDN

Before becoming director of EDN, Paul was Managing Director for the Belgium production company Congoo bvba. Paul has a long track record of working with international documentary co-productions from both a commissioning and production point of view. He has been the managing director of the media academy ETMA, commissioning editor for the Belgium public service broadcaster VRT and has almost 30 years of experience with producing documentaries for the national and international market. In addition to these positions Paul Pauwels has been a tutor, moderator and expert at many European workshops and seminars, member of Eurovision Documentary Workgroup and one of the first Chairs of EDN. 

Marie Pourcelot, EuroDoc

Marie is the co-ordinator of the EuroDoc Training Programme. EuroDoc is a training programme composed of 3 one-week workshops in 3 different European countries over 8 months. It is designed for documentary film producers who want to enhance the development stage of their projects on the international level, to improve their knowledge and to strengthen their artistic and economic skills. The programme fosters the development of documentary film projects in a highly demanding and creative way.

Manuela Winkler, Documentary Campus

As Event Manager at Documentary Campus, Manuela is responsible for the industry events and conferences that Documentary Campus is hosting in partnership with leading festivals in Europe, including CPH:DOX, Sheffield Doc/Fest, MipDoc or DOK.fest Munich. The industry events are part of the Documentary Campus Masterschool programme which gives filmmakers the skills they need to join the international market and to create compelling content that travels across platforms. Some of the success stories that came out of the Masterschool programme include Notes on BlindnessSomething Better to Come, or Houston, We Have a Problem. The Masterschool calls for submissions once a year before the end of November. Their industry events take place throughout the year in different locations in Europe.

Meike Statema, International Documentary Film Festival Amsterdam

Meike is IDFA’s Head of Education, responsible the festival programs for young audiences and the IDFAcademy. In order to stimulate new talent and high level documentary production, IDFAcademy organizes international training programs for emerging filmmakers: the IDFAcademy Summer School. Here directors have the opportunity to meet and work on their project in editing or script stage with highly esteemed filmmakers. During the festival in November up to 100 participants gain up-to-date market knowledge of the documentary industry and get inspired by renowned masters and the current trends in documentary filmmaking. 

Patrick Hurley, Sheffield Doc/Fest

Patrick runs Sheffield Doc/Fest’s international Marketplace connecting filmmakers with industry Decision Makers to get new documentaries made and seen. He also oversees the Festival’s All Year talent development programmes. Formerly Distribution Manager at Dogwoof, Patrick has worked closely with filmmakers, producers and partners on a diverse slate of over 100 documentary releases including The Act of Killing, Blackfish, Cartel Land, Concerning Violence, The Confession, Dior and I, Dreamcatcher, Leviathan, The Look of Silence, Planet of Snail, Speed Sisters, Ken Loach’s The Spirit of ‘45 and Michael Moore’s Where to Invade Next.

Neasa Ní Chianáin, Director, School Life 

Neasa Ní Chianáin is an Irish documentary filmmaker who started directing in 2001 with television documentaries. Her previous credits include the award-winning Frank Ned & Busy Lizzie which won the Best Feature award at The Celtic Film Festival 2004; Fairytale of Kathmandu which world premiered at IDFA 2007 in the Silver Wolf Competition and subsequently won three international awards; and The Stranger which premiered in Locarno Film Festival in 2014. She is best known for School Life which premiered at IDFA and Sundance Film Festivals.

David Rane, Producer & Director, School Life

David Rane is a BAFTA-winning producer and director, who over the last 20 years has produced many award-winning documentary films for national and international broadcasters, a number of animated films, and a number of short fiction films. His company, Soilsiú Films, have had their work screened in France, Germany, The Netherlands, Belgium, Taiwan, Finland, the United States, New Zealand and more. Soilsiú Films received EU MEDIA Programme Single Project funding in 2002 and 2010, and Slate funding support in 2005 and Creative Europe Development funding in 2012 and 2014.
