Final Instalment of ‘David McWilliams’ Ireland’ Airs Tonight on TV3 – Thursday, November 23

In the final episode of ‘David McWilliams’ Ireland’, the renowned broadcaster and economist takes on the rural lobby and asks if it’s time to accept that the economic future of Ireland is urban?

Calling for more investment in Dublin, Cork, Limerick, Galway and Waterford, David argues that our cities have suffered from under investment, in part because of the power of the rural lobby, or what he describes as ‘The Sunday Game’ approach to planning. 

David examines the phenomenon of ‘Applegreen Land’ – Ireland’s ‘suburbs on steroids’ and outlines his belief that Dublin acts as an ATM for large parts of the rest of the country.

Speaking about this phenomenon, David McWilliams states:

“10 billion Euros leaves Dublin to the countryside every single year. So far from Dublin being something that sucks in the resources, Dublin is actually a large ATM for the rest of the country”

Colm McCarthy (Economist), Mairead Lavery (Irish Country Living) and a host of other contributors and audience members discuss how all this is affecting our quality of life; from the job opportunities we have, to the houses we live in and the commutes we must make.

The show which is produced and directed by James Cotter will also feature skits from comedian Oliver Callan as Leo Varadkar and Andrew Maxwell in the new factual entertainment format.

Other crew include: DOP Mark Bennett, Val Sherlock on Hair & Makeup, and Editor Liam Kelly. The show was Produced by Daniel Murray, Lydia Murphy, and Exec. Producer Aoife Stokes.

David McWilliams’ Ireland: the Republic of Suburbia airs on TV3 tomorrow night, Thursday 23rd November at 10pm.
