Ruth Negga, Ciarán Hinds & Domhnall Gleeson join the American Academy
29 Jun 2017 : Katie McNeice
Still, 'Loving'
The Irish actors are among the 774 in the class of 2017, who are invited by The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.

Each of them will now be eligible to vote in the upcoming Oscars, joining fellow Irish talents Emma Donoghue (Room), John Crowley Brooklyn), Benjamin Cleary (Stutterer), Lenny Abrahamson (Room), Nora Twomey (The Breadwinner) and more, who were part of the 2016 class.

Gleeson’s recent work on ‘Goodbye Christopher Robin’ is expected to earn him attention during the 2018 Oscars season, while Ciarán Hinds’ newest appearances include ‘Silence’ and ‘Bleed for This’. Negga’s invitation follows her nomination for her performance in ‘Loving’.

Diversity

The class of 2017 is still making moves to increase diversity in the American Academy but is down from 46% female additions to 39% this year, and from 41% to 30% in terms of non-caucasian invitees.

Elle Fanning who starred alongside Colin Firth in ‘The Beguiled’ is the youngest talent to receive an invitation, at nineteen years of age. Cinematographer Steven Noble whose credits include ‘A Monster Calls’ starring Liam Neeson is invited in his category, while ‘The Light Between Oceans’ with Michael Fassbender in the leading role also has its director Derek Cianfrance in the line-up.

Others include ‘Bridget Jones’s Diary’ filmmaker Sharon Maguire who was born in the UK to Irish parents, and ‘The OA’ creator Brit Marling who starred alongside IFTA 2017 Rising Star Winner Patrick Gibson in the hit Netflix series.
