Neil Jordan’s 1.2M ‘Riviera’ Audience marks largest Sky Atlantic premiere of 2017
26 Jun 2017 : Katie McNeice
Julia Stiles stars in the ten-part series, with its first episode which aired on Thursday June 15th becoming the most watched Sky Original Production premiere since season one of ‘Fortitude’.

‘Riviera’ has also broken records with over 5.3M downloads of the box set from Sky Atlantic in its first week, again outperforming the likes of ‘The Night Of’, ‘Billions’ and ‘The Tunnel: Sabotage’.

Adding to this, almost a million viewers have watched the second episode on demand in the five days since its premiere, with 281,000 watching the entire series in the first week.

The cast is led by Julia Stiles (Jason Bourne) as Georgina Clios, a newlywed whose husband is killed in a yacht explosion. Following his death the lies, violence and danger surrounding his empire are revealed, prompting Georgina to protect her family and herself.

Nora Arnezeder (Safe House), Monica Bellucci (Irreversible), Iwan Rheon (Game of Thrones) and Adrian Lester (Hustle) also star.

Zai Bennett, Director of Programmes, Sky:
“Our customers want the flexibility to watch shows when and how they want. Whether that’s tuning in live to Sky Atlantic each week or binge-watching on demand – we are giving them that option. With the powerful storyline and compelling characters of Riviera, it’s no wonder viewers are already hooked with 5.3 million downloads to date.”

Co-writer and director Neil Jordan has urged critics and viewers to distance him from the series however, claiming producers reworked the scripts he and writer John Banville had created together, and took the series in a direction he is unhappy with.

Neil Jordan, Co-Writer & Director:
"The first two episodes that myself and John wrote were very dark and complex, and that’s what got everybody attracted to the project in the first place. Sky Atlantic got involved because of these scripts. But then the producers decided to go in a different direction."

‘Riviera’ from Archery Pictures and Primo Productions is produced by Foz Allen with Jordan, Cameron Roach (Waterloo Road), Liza Marshall (Boy A), Paul McGuinness (U2: Rattle and Hum) and Kris Thykier (Woman in Gold) as executive producers.

All episodes of ‘Riviera’ are now available exclusively on Sky Atlantic and online streaming service, NOW TV in Ireland and the UK.
