Irish-Italian Co-Production ‘L’Accabadora’ reaches €250k at Italian Box Office

The project is a Mammoth Films and Karios collaboration and is has been on release in Italy via distributor Koch Media for five weeks. Donatella Finocchiarro and Sara Serraiocco also star.

It received funding through the Irish Film Board’s Creative Co-Production strand, receiving €150,000 in Q2 2013. Sardinian Enrico Pau directs Irish talent Barry Ward (Jimmy’s Hall) in the title, for which he specifically learned Italian.

Producers are Jane Doolan (Maze) of Mammoth Films and Francesco Pamphili of Karios.

After strong reviews the film had sold-out screenings and achieved one of the highest screen averages in Italy on its opening weekend, with continued positive reviews.

Set in rural Sardinia and its largest city Cagliari during the Second World War, L’Accabadora tells the story of Annetta, a woman whose fate has been written in stone since her birth. After a tragic event, when she is called upon to give her sister a ‘good death’, Annetta must confront her own fate in order to help her sister’s troubled daughter.

Irish creative input behind the camera also includes director of photography Piers McGrail, and original score by Stephen Rennicks. Sound and VFX post-production were completed at Windmill Lane with sound mixer Mark Henry and VFX supervisor Tim Chauncey. RaiCom are selling international rights to L’Accabadora at the Cannes Film Festival Market.
