TV and media production is the application of digital technology to the production of video and audio media in the form of DVD, TV, web development, music and film. The media landscape has changed significantly in recent years and increasingly personnel working across the media spectrum are required to have competency in a range of areas such as design, production, content creation, editing and management skills. 

This four-year honours degree programme offers practical hands-on experience for students with access to high-quality production facilities including a dedicated TV and audio studio and editing suite with all of the latest editing and animation software. 

The practical focus of the programme is reflected in the modules which includes: Sound Design, Scriptwriting, TV Production, Light and Sound, Production Management, Web Technology, Media Technology, Media Law and Enterprise, Video Production, Visual Culture and Graphics and Animation.

Special Features:

  • 60% of student contact time is practical. 
  • 70% of programme is assessed through continuous assessment rather than exams.
  • Dedicated TV and  audio studio and editing facilities.
  • Editing suite with all of the latest editing and animation software (AVID, Adobe, ProTools).
  • Location filming on and off campus.

The practical focus of this programme is reflected in its modules, which includes: Sound Design and Scriptwriting, TV Production, Light and Sound, Production Management, Web Technology and Graphics and Animation.

  • 70% of the programme is via continuous assessment rather than exams.
  • Dedicated broadcast quality TV and  audio studio and editing facilities.
  • In 2014 a student of this programme won the RTE New Voice in the National Student Media Award.

This three-year programme provides an academic and professional qualification for students interested in a career in the media and public relations industries. It is a broad-based arts degree with a strong focus on applied learning. The students on our programme combine academic and practical skills so they learn about PR and media by completing projects for real-world clients. They then combine this experience with in-depth knowledge of media and PR theories, which underpin their practice and creates expertise.

The four-year programme is designed to facilitate a transition from novice student to creative practitioner. Students are taught a variety of skills to achieve this including: creative problem solving; design principles and practices; project management; communication and collaboration; technical design skills, marketing and entrepreneurship. This highly practical programme features structured studio practice where students complete projects in design (graphics, illustration, branding, advertising, editorials/magazines and signage; media (websites, mobile devices and games) and the moving image (video and animation).

Year 1 is shared with art students, enabling the integration of ideas and the exploration of design and art, design principles, process and skills in typography and image manipulation. In Year 2 students focus on project briefs in new media design and experiment with design for web, motion graphics, animation, games, video and mobile devices. Year 3 focuses on design projects in brand development, packaging, information design and print production while Year 4 develops design consultancy skills across all media.

Special Features:

  • Studio-based programme with skills training across all media. Students of the programme will graduate with a portfolio of work in graphic design, digital media and video.
  • Annual industry showcase event for final year students to exhibit work to potential employers.
  • Students are encouraged to compete in a variety of national student competitions and have performed well in recent years. Students of this programme have won first place at the Samsung Digital Media Awards in 2014 and 2015 and an Erasmus student also won ‘Best Slogan’ at the National Campus Engage competition for National Student Volunteer Award.
  • Exit awards: Higher Certificate in Visual Communications and Design (NFQ Level 6) after Year 2; Bachelor of Arts in Visual Communications and Design (NFQ Level 7) after Year 3.
