IFTA-winning Production Designer Anna Rackard (Love & Friendship, Foyle’s War) is set to tutor two training courses on the process of drafting, at both introductory and more experienced levels.
The three-day introductory level course is set to run from December 14th-16th in LIT/LSAD, Co. Limerick.
It is aimed at those with little or no architectural or built environment background or knowledge, who are ideally looking to develop a career in the Art Department. The deadline for applications is Friday, December 2nd.
Day 1:
- Introduction to a film construction drawing
- Introduction to the equipment used for pencil drafting
- Working with scale and measurements
- Reading drawings
- Understanding 2 dimensional drawings in 3 dimensions
- The principles of drafting geometry
Day 2
- Review of basics of surveying, use of surveying equipment and information that needs to be acquired on survey, sketching of plans and elevations for purposes of recording data. Use of photography to record detail
- Practical experience of surveying
- Quick review of principles of scale and dimensioning prior to drawing up of the surveys
- Practical experience of drawing up of a survey
- Overview of drawing presentation, dimensioning, style, texturing, titles and lettering etc.
Day 3
- Carry on with drawing up of survey
- Introduction to doors and windows and other important details
- Discussion of line weight, using texture to indicate set finishes
- Dimensioning and annotating drawings
- Review of drawings, Q&A based on participants’ questions
- Short slideshow at end of day using an examples to demonstrate how the design process works from preliminary concepts, choosing a location, creating construction drawings and building the final set

The second course to be tutored by Rackard takes place from January 4th-6th in SAUL, UL and is aimed at those who do have some architectural or built environment background or knowledge, and who are looking to apply their drafting/surveying skills to a film and television setting.
This course will involve a review of the basics of surveying, as well as a more advanced look at the topics outlined in the introductory course.
The deadline for applications to this course is Friday, December 9th.
