Ten female directors are featured in ‘The New Women of Cinema’ sidebar of the festival, which runs in the French Alps from December 10th-17th.
The ‘Mammal’ director who was nominated for an IFTA Rising Star Award just this year will have her work screened alongside Caméra d’Or Winner ‘Divines’ from Houda Benyamina and ‘Brownian Movement’ directed by multi-award winning Nanouk Leopold, among others.
2016 festival screenings for 'Mammal' have included Cannes, Edinburgh International Film Festival and Irish Screen America.
The New Women of Cinema extends the original Femme de Cinema award which has been part of the festival since 2013, and has been organised in association with Le Deuxième Regard, a Parisian lobby group composed of female film professionals.
A commissioned study of female directors, round-tables and masterclass also feature in the programme, with the festival also pursuing gender parity in their wider programme this year, particularly those featured in the competition line-up.
Guillaume Calop & Pierre-Emmanuel Fleurantin, Festival Co-Founders:
“On closer examination, we can see that things are changing. We launched a study that shows that a new generation is emerging. Among first and second films, the proportion of movies made by women is 50 percent higher than among those who have made three films or more.”
An evolution in customs and culture as well as bold policies is finally bearing fruit. This trend is still fragile and as a festival we’re committed to supporting it by putting the spotlight on female directors who are an example that the world can change for the better.“
