The British Academy of Film and Television, have announced a couple of changes to the way it considers TV shows to reflect today's trend towards co- productions.
BAFTA published updated rules and guidelines for the TV and TV craft awards next year, with a refinement of eligibility in line with the changing landscape of funding and co-productions.
For the TV awards, there is a change to eligibility outside the international category "to put the emphasis on creativity rather than on funding," director of awards and membership Emma Baehr tells The Hollywood Reporter.
Under the old guidelines, at least 50% of a TV show's budget had to come from the UK to be considered for the non-international categories. Now, shows must prove that creative control resides in the UK.
For example,‘The Night Manager’(BBC/AMC co-production) was previously only eligible in the international category because of its funding. But now, because its creative team resides in the UK and its development is driven from Britain, it can be included for homegrown awards.
Regarding the TV Craft Awards, UK-based individuals will now be eligible for honours, even if the show they work on is only qualified for the international category of the TV Awards.
For example, if someone works on ‘Game of Thrones’, they can be included for the TV Craft Awards so long as they reside in the UK and their craft was also completed there.
The nominations for the TV Craft Awards will be revealed on March 28, followed by nominations for the TV Awards on April 11.
The British Academy of Film and Television, have also set the dates for the 2017 ceremonies. The TV Awards ceremony will be held on Sunday, 14th May and TV Craft Awards will take place on Sunday, 23rd April. The Film Awards have already been confirmed for Sunday, February 14.
