‘In Loco Parentis’ debuts at the International Documentary Film Festival
24 Oct 2016 : Nathan Griffin
Award winning filmmakers Neasa Ní Chianáin and David Rane’s new project ‘In Loco Parentis’ has been named in the final 15 films selected for the IDFA’s main feature length competition.

It is also the first Irish film to be selected for this competition in the festivals 29 year history.

IDFA, the world’s largest documentary film festival, draws an average audience of 100,000 to the Dutch city for the ten day event at which 300 documentary films will be screened. These have been selected from almost 3,500 original submissions globally, this year.

The documentary itself follows a year in the life of Ireland’s only boarding school for primary school children.

Four years in the making, In Loco Parentis is a gentle and poignant observational film about the unique Headfort School, outside Kells in County Meath, a home from home for boarders as young as eight years old from as far afield as Korea and Tanzania.

The film focuses on two of the longest serving staff members, John and Amanda Leyden, who met as young teachers at the school in the 1970’s and live together on the school grounds.

Although seemingly unconventional, both are dedicated and inspiring teachers, who work long hours, serving as mentors and surrogate parents for the children in their care, but as they are getting on in years, the prospect of the end of their time at Headfort is looming.

Neasa Ní Chianáin:
“I was so impressed by the Leyden’s absolute dedication and vocation for teaching. To them, all these children were their children and continued to be their children long after they left. While we were filming, a steady stream of past pupils, some of them now middle aged adults, would show up to visit them.”

Headfort School is the last remaining primary boarding school in Ireland. Located on a 40 acre country estate in Kells, Co Meath, children from Ireland, Spain, France, Germany, Korea, Uganda, Nigeria, Mexico, Russia and the USA, board from the age of 7 to 13 years.

‘In Loco Parentis’ will have its World Premiere on Saturday 19 November in Amsterdam.
