IFTA launches new TG4 series ‘Fir Bolg’
31 Aug 2016 : Katie McNeice
The Irish Film & Television Academy’s launch of the new TG4 comedy series celebrated a wealth of Irish talent, from acting to musical performances, while promoting Irish language content.

The Members Screening and Q&A with cast and crew was followed by live musical performances at The Sugar Club Dublin last night.

Sean McGinley lead the cast of ‘Fir Bolg’ as Davy Gilbride in the exclusive first look at the six-part series, which garnered laughs, applause and praise from IFTA Members throughout the evening.

Director Tom Sullivan and Writer/Producer Brian Reddin were joined on stage for the Q&A session by Aonghus McAnally, Don Wycherley, Fiachna Ó Braonáin, Paddy Courtney and Peader Cox.

Brian Reddin again commended the role of Micheál O’Meallaigh in securing support from TG4 in the early stages of the project during the Q&A session. Sullivan also praised the broadcaster for the great freedom the team enjoyed in the casting process, and also thanked Reddin for the privilege of directing such top-quality writing for the small screen.

‘Fir Bolg’ was described at TG4’s Autumn launch yesterday as “Spinal Tap with a bodhrán.” Don Wycherly and Aonghus McAnally continued this comedic theme last night on stage with their descriptions of Wycherly mysteriously learning to play the pipes in three days.

Reddin also talked the audience through the fun he had in creating lyrical content, which includes a fictional Christmas single called, ‘Celtic Snowman’. Patrick Bergin (We Still Steal the Old Way) was also in attendance last night and joined McAnally on stage for live music following the Q&A session.
