The IFTA-nominated screenwriter’s latest series places a teenage girl in The Troubles of 1990s Northern Ireland.

‘Derry Girls’ is fresh in its approach to portraying life in NI, as McGee hopes to stray from the typically downcast and bleak dramas which have tackled the topic of The Troubles before her.

The six-part series will see protagonist Erin against a backdrop of armoured cars, army checkpoints and more, but will focus most particularly on the romantic, interpersonal and familial conflicts in any teenager’s day-to-day life. Caroline Leddy known for ‘The Inbetweeners’ and Liz Lewin of ‘My Mad Fat Diary’ are set to produce the project.

‘Derry Girls’ was announced at the recent Edinburgh TV Festival, at which Deputy Head of Comedy at Channel 4 Nerys Evans stated, “’Derry Girls’ may have a unique setting, but it’s a really warm family sitcom, seen through the eyes of teenager Erin. Lisa’s writing is truthful, brave and laugh-out loud funny.”

McGee’s nomination for Best Script in the Drama category at the 2016 IFTA Film & Drama Awards was earned for her work on series ‘Indian Summers’. She also received the award for Best Television Drama Series from Writers' Guild of Great Britain in 2008 for ‘Being Human’.

Other notable work includes creating the restaurant series ‘Raw’, which ran for five seasons , earning its cast and crew a collection of awards across directing, editing and acting at home and abroad.

Other series announced by Channel 4 include ‘The Bisexual’ by ‘Girls’ actress Desiree Akhavan and ‘Mutiny’, which will see Anthony Middleton lead an expedition to re-imagine one of the greatest feats of maritime history.
