The 28th Galway Film Fleadh, in association with Gréasán na Méan Skillnet, has announced that Kirsten Smith will be the subject of this year’s Screenwriters Masterclass.
Along with screen-writing partner Karen McCullah, Smith has written over 30 scripts including ‘Legally Blonde’, ‘10 Things I Hate About You’, ‘She’s The Man’, ‘Ella Enchanted’, ‘The House Bunny’ and more. She has also written and directed two short films, ‘The Spleenectomy’, and ‘The Multi-Hyphenate’, both starring Anna Faris, and executive produced ‘Whip It’, starring Ellen Page and Kristin Wiig.
A published poet, she's also the author of two young adult novels, The Geography of Girlhood and Trinkets, the latter of which is being developed for television.
The masterclass will address the art of comedy writing, mining the classics for inspiration, Plants and payoffs, polishing a scene and creative collaboration.
The masterclass will be moderated by Mary Kate O Flanagan, screenwriter and script consultant. Mary Kate, along with her sister Rachel, has a story consultancy called A Dramatic Improvement who work with producers and screenwriters across Europe and in Ireland, helping to shape their stories, for maximum impact on an audience. In 2015 Mary Kate became Ireland's first Grand Slam Champion Storyteller at The Moth.
The masterclass costs €50 and will take place on Thursday the 7th of July from 10am – 1pm in the Radisson Hotel, Galway.
